The school year ends, and with that so does everything else max thought was solid in her life. With Marcus away at rehab, Ginny keeping her distance, and Norah barely texting back, mang isn't just drifting it’s gone. Max tried being the same over the top version of herself, but the jokes weren’t landing like they had in the past. She's even tired of hearing her own voice.
Abby still shows up though, mostly to roll her eyes and call Max exhausting. But underneath the snark, there’s something steadier. Something Max didn’t realize she needed until the silence around her got too loud.

“Yaz? What’s that?” the Doctor asks, looking down. With a jolt, Yaz follows her gaze to the exposed skin of her inner arm. Her body flashes cold then hot, the heady joy and adrenaline rush from their run fading in an instant to be replaced by sick, panicky dread coursing through her veins, flooding every part of her.
“‘S nothin’,” Yaz says quickly, releasing the lever and pulling her arm in close to her body. She was always so careful, long sleeved period blouses and leather jackets and excuses about getting in the water after them, arms down and out of sight. She was always so careful until she wasn’t, because she and the Doctor—what? Had got closer? Had skimmed a couple stones on a rocky beach?
