Because despite everything, she kept waking up wanting more. More of his quiet. More of his anger. His laugh, rare and crooked. His body, pressed to hers like it might hold her together when everything else kept trying to split her apart. She told herself it was proximity. Adrenaline. The slow, shared ache of surviving a war that didn’t leave room for softness. But when she lay awake at night, staring at the crack in the ceiling above her bed, it was his face she saw. She hated how easy it was, how inevitable it had begun to feel, to imagine herself tangled in him again.
