When barbarians successfully invade the castle Tony does not expect to live much longer. His parents have already been killed. He is sure to follow. The great Captain of the North is not exactly known for his mercy after all. That is why it is a complete surprise when he is kept alive instead. And not even for the purpose of becoming a bed warmer or slave. No, apparently the Captain has 'taken a liking to him' and means to keep him around for much more innocent purposes. For as long as he doesn't get tired of him that is. Until then all Tony can do is fearfully wait for that day.

As Dean blew out the candles, Tony clung to Steve’s side and looked at their son’s face in awe. He didn’t know if this was the first time the boy had candles to blow, but he knew it wouldn’t be the last. Drawn from his musings, he felt a buzz from his pocket.
“Steve,” he whispered, looking at the screen in shock.
“Hmm?” the man responded, looking away from the recording he was taking on his phone.

Tommy's feet drag in the snow.
It's so, so cold. He's so cold. His toes are freezing. His exposed shins feel like they’ve been cut open-- even the one that’s bandaged. His wings have gone numb, which is almost, almost good, because now he can’t feel the shifting, broken bones inside of the left one, just under feathers and muscle.
He doesn’t know why he’s still walking.

Or, Tommy leaves the exploded ruins of Logstedshire behind, and walks until he finds somewhere safe.
And things keep going from there.
(A canon-divergent AU, splitting off somewhere around when Tommy started hiding out below Techno's house.)
