Summary
At the funeral, Katara doesn’t dress in white. It causes a scandal or would do if her belly wasn’t round with the Fire Nation’s future. She doesn’t look away from the pyre, not even when the prayers tapper out, smoke rises, and the Firelord’s crown is placed in her top knot.
She kneels to receive Zuko’s crown and his child kicks, blissfully ignorant within her.
She wears black and navy robes, charcoal smeared over her eyes and forehead so that when she finally— finally— is out of the public eye and can burst into tears, she tastes salt and fire as the charcoal paste runs over her lips and stains her tongue.

Summary
Zuko goes into exile with a scar, a mission, and a wife.
The girl wears ill fitted ceremonial silks. She is too thin, with jutting bones and hollowed eyes. Dirt smudges her cheek. Her lower lip has a healing split in it. Gaudy as her finery is, she wears it like prisoner’s rags.
All of this Zuko registers in the time it takes him to reach the dais and bow. Every muscle aches with the remembrance of what happened the last time he knelt before Father. This time there is no begging, no roar of the crowd, no burning. Still—Zuko’s grateful to stand once more.
Slipping into soldier’s parade rest, he waits for what will come next, all too aware of the girl’s defiant body next to his.
“I am told that this is Katara of the Southern Water Tribe,” Father says, cruel amusement oiling his words. The phrasing makes the girl sound like a thing. “The last waterbender of their pathetic tribe.” Flames conceal all but his shadow, yet Zuko knows from long experience the exacting blade of his father’s smirk. The smirk he must surely wear now. Because he has built up his insult and now he lets it fall. “Your bride.”

This is legit one of my favorite fics EVER!! 100000/10 recommend!
"'—I can’t lose you. I don’t care what they say about me. None of it hurts like seeing you hurt because of me.' Katara is crying. And he’s undone. Zuko doesn’t think before pulling her into his arms. She comes easily and buries her face into the crook of his neck. 'You won’t lose me,' he murmurs. 'I promise, Katara.' When her breath hitches in another sob, he presses his cheek to her tousled hair. They cling to one another until it aches."
"But then she lowers her gaze back to him, moonlight still caught in her hair and her eyes, and rushes up into him. Slender arms wind around his shoulders even as her face presses into the hollow of his neck. It’s instinct to wrap his own arms around her. To pull her so close he can feel the uneven beat of their hearts. 'You’re my sun, Zuko,' she whispers, and he feels the words more than hears them. 'Don’t ever forget that.'"
"'I chose her,' Zuko snaps, before he can think better of it. 'I chose Katara.' Because he did. Every day since that throne room he has chosen Katara. Giving up on his hair, he turns fully away from his uncle and stares out at the horizon. 'But Katara didn’t choose me.'"
"The way that between her and his throne, he thinks he would choose her"
"'I chose you,' he promises. 'I’ll always choose you.'" THIS LINE MAKES ME SCREAM
"'I will never let anyone hurt you like that again. Never.'"
"But now she’s knotting her fingers in his hair and pressing senseless kisses to his temple and saying, 'You didn’t ruin any of our lives, Zuko. You saved us. You saved me. And if you can’t… can’t forgive yourself yet, then— Then I can forgive you. I can love you enough for both of us. I do love you enough for both of us. You’re my husband. Do you hear me? You’re my husband, and I forgive you, and I love you more than I’ve ever hated the Fire Nation.'"
"'You’re my husband,' she says. 'You’re my sun. You’re my homeland.' Gently she cups his cheek, her hand stained with her own tears, and pulls him into her. Their foreheads touch. When he exhales, she inhales, and they’ve got the same air in their lungs. 'I was scared. I’m still—' She swallows, clenching her eyes shut. 'I’m still fucking scared. But I love you. I trust you. If you’ll let me— No, even if you won’t, I’ll follow you.'"
"'I loved you as a prisoner in my father’s throne room. I love you as my best friend. I love you as—' Beneath him, she shivers and makes a soft noise of protest. Of longing. 'I love you as the Avatar.'"

Summary
Katara made a different choice during The Southern Raiders, and everything changed.
"She wondered if her friends and family would be able to tell. If her vengeance would show on her face, if the way she held her body would betray her darkness. But they believed her when she lied, when she said she let him go, and it made her pause. What else would they not notice?"

The angsty ending hurt 😭
"It was her first friendship that didn’t feel like a transaction. Their flaws made them equal, and for once she didn’t feel the need to be motherly, or mature, or perfect. Together they could just be."
"'Katara is my equal. If you won’t respect her place in the palace, you’ll have no place in my kingdom at all.'"

Summary
“Koh! Leave us and go.”
“Well, well... I haven’t seen you in quite a while, Zuko.” Its voice was inhuman and tinged with restrained malice. “It’s been, what, two years?” It tutted, paralleling the sound of its many legs clacking across the dry land and brittle grass. It paused its motion. Katara looked up curiously but Zuko urged her to keep her face hidden against his chest, his hand warm through her hair. The monster continued, “How long do you plan to linger here?”
Some people take a wrong turn in this world and find themselves unable to return, lost on the far side of the veil. Katara learns that some people don’t end up there by accident.
