    What was Shulk to him?

    Older, certainly. Wise. Kind. Reserved in a way that Rex wasn't, but eager to talk about machines and engineering in a way that usually annoyed most people when Nikol brought it up. In some ways, they looked alike, but Nikol's face is a bit different, his coloration different too. Sometimes he would catch Shulk looking at him with an expression Nikol could never quite place, caught somewhere between pain and affection.

Then again, in the few minutes he had spent with the other members of the Chosen Four he had been ambushed, which was treated as something completely normal.

    If Tony’s going to be honest, the first few days without Jeff were rough. The two of them had been inseparable ever since they met and now he’s gone indefinitely off on a faraway crusade against the forces of evil, leaving Tony staring mournfully out the window like a widow who’s husband went off to war. Things only got worse once a terrifying group of aliens showed up and kidnapped him. He thought it was all over until Jeff blew the leader to smithereens and rescued him. Now that he’s back it’s nothing but smooth sailing… is what he would be saying if he wasn’t currently trailing behind the rest of the group as Jeff chatters with his new friends.

    She hoped the others were doing alright. The three of them were like a tower of blocks: remove one and it isn’t half as tall. Nevertheless, she had faith in her companions. They were probably halfway through the building, or at least planning a rescue mission at this point. If their mental connection got better, she could tell them the defenses she scoped out. If she escaped, she could find wherever they ran off to and they could explode the building and get her some food that wasn’t a bland sandwich. Everyone wins! With that final thought, Paula set off.

    “I swear if someone laughs at me for saying yes instead of no one more time, I’m either going to punch them or break down crying.” Ness stomps forwards, brows furrowed and eyes strained. His hand is clutching the bat so tightly he’s white knuckled, hat askew and bag damaged.

    “Knowing the Moonsiders? They’d take that as a compliment.” Jeff trails behind him, bowtie wrapped around his arm acting as a makeshift bandage.

    For the first time in years, Jeff Andonuts wonders if he is fitting in well with his new peers. Don’t get him wrong, they’re wonderful people. Ness has a sort of infectious determination that makes you feel invincible and Paula’s raw power can make even the most difficult of enemies falter. They’ve taken his addition to the team in stride, finding ways to incorporate his inventions into plans and making an active effort to include him in conversations. It’s hard not to feel like part of a larger unit when the only thing between you and the horrifying reality of your new life are the jokes you crack with your friends, giving otherworldly creatures silly names and staying up late into the night in hotel rooms talking about your life. Certainly, there are worse people to be saving the world with.

    It’s the fact that he’s never really had to move outside of his previous friend circle that causes him strife.
