Summary
Preservation is a non-corporate entity that wants to ensure there is a future for their children. In a place where terraforming is so essential, it would make sense for marriages to mean joining a family unit rather than just being with someone romantically.
For a ship's crew, it would make sense that being together, regardless of marriage status, is critical. Keeping as a single unit allows for spending time together rather than being at the whims of their ship's schedule.
Put the two together, and you get a comedy of errors in which Amena is ready to defend her dissertation of why she should join the family unit that is the crew (even while already working there. It is not the same, after all) while everyone else is already convinced Iris and her are married. They are together, after all.
