Summary
It does me no good;
violence has changed me.
My body had grown cold like the stripped fields;
now there is only my mind, cautious and wary.
- Louise Gluck, from October in "Averno"As a girl, you always dreamed of dragons, great and terrible things, scales beautiful as they laid waste to the fields below. Used to chase their mortal descendants in the gardens, head full of fantasy. What else could you do but dream of what it was like to fly, knowing that you would die in the valley which refused to be named home.
You never once thought to dream of what would happen when the dragon in the mountain called for its brides.

Summary
There’s a house at the end of the holler. An elegant old thing, the women think. Bought with blood money, the men mutter.
They say a man lives there.
Well, they say someonelives there, but they aren’t quite so kind as to call him a man. A devil, really. He frightens them, though it’s not that hard a task.
He’s temptation, blood red eyes, hair like winter, spinning gold out of nothing at all.
Nobody ever talks about the real monster lurking in his shadow. To give something a name is to invite it inside, and while the people living on the tracks of the N-109 are a fearful, superstitious bunch, nobody would ever be so bold as to call them stupid.

Summary
When you buy an old abandoned house, you're typically concerned with the horrors that exist outside of it. A storm sends rain through the roof, a burglar eager to steal what few charming possessions remain, an unruly raccoon upends the garbage. Normal, mundane, everyday problems.
It never crosses your mind that the real horror exists inside the house, but it is all too eager to consider you.

Summary
What goes too long unchanged destroys itself.
The forest is forever because it dies and dies and so lives.
- Tales from Earthsea; Dragonfly, by Ursula Le GuinThe Bene Gesserit have long since destroyed the old ways, the ten-thousand-year-old faiths and fictions by which the gods were defined - the many-faced gods of the river who gave and took, or the gaping mouthed hunger of the desert gods and their winding paths - and instead taught a new faith. The Golden Path, the One Who Points the Way, a miserable saint who would lead us to paradise. Those who did not believe were allowed their ignorance, components of rituals that would pave the way.
Not all gods faded, despite the sister's slow plague of faith. Not all were content to die, rotten and forgotten by their followers, and instead thrived in the dark.
Waiting for the day they might black out the sun.
