Summary
At the eve of losing the war, Prince Nicholas finds out that a man who claims to be the revered Marshal of his enemy has voluntarily surrendered and has a message to deliver to him. The Prince decides to pay a visit to his prisoner with less than pure intentions. Neither expects this to be the beginning of an uneasy alliance, one that forces Nicholas to lose the mantle of the Prince and become someone else entirely.

"One more trick," Webster said. "Play, and win or lose you will walk away with your fortune." Ash stared at him. Webster made an impatient gesture. "I don't want or need your money. Or your house. Or your coat and shirt, come to that."
It was an offer of princely generosity. Ash's mouth was dry. "And what would you have from me?" he asked.
Something flared in Webster's cool expression for a moment, like a shark flashing a fin in still waters. "A month," he said.

"Pretty fucking poetic for being half-loaded," Roman says. His skin is crawling, but it's not unpleasant.
"I'm a politician, I prepare my metaphors in advance," Mencken says. His gaze is fixed on Roman, hard; Roman has the sudden thought that the place could get firebombed and Mencken would still be trying to catch his gaze. "Edge," Mencken says. "Ego. Reputation. Don't you think?"
Roman trips and falls into a very questionable relationship with a fascist.
