The snow came early that year.
It crunched beneath Remus’s boots as he followed Sirius through the frost-covered woodlands north of Inverness. The trees were brittle with ice, bare limbs like skeletal fingers scratching at a sky the color of old parchment.
“There,” Sirius said, his voice low, pointing toward a half-collapsed fence beyond the trees. Remus stepped up beside him, heart sinking.
