Her game mostly worked against anarchistic minds like her own, who, in the first place, would never fall prey to holy matrimony. Nonetheless, in her reverie, all possibilities, especially that of buckling under her brother’s wife, outdid Ava’s ability to give a shit.
Michael just stared, thoughts scintillating behind his eyes, a look that Ava recognized from her teenage years, particularly when he would catch her doing something he had not asked.

Waves of red and white rumble through the street, scarves swinging round as voices chant for the team's recent win. Beatrice watched the match on the TV; it was an impressive 4-0.
She spots the bucket hat first - bright pink and not at all matching any other item of clothing in the vicinity. Then, the familiar woman throws her head back in a laugh that Beatrice swears she can hear from her living room, and that smile comes into view. Beatrice doesn't even know her name, has taken to calling her bucket hat in her mind. It feels weird having a crush on someone that doesn't even know you exist. That's what this is, a crush. Something Beatrice doesn't get very often but when she does it's for the most inconvenient people.
