    Summary

The sage green jacket that her mother loves is soaked through — it’s just water, tepid, safe water, Vee reminds herself — and so at first it seems reasonable to think that she’s just drying off at the entrance. As if in confirmation Camila shakes her head lightly, like a dog, and flicks droplets everywhere. At this angle, the rounded glasses that Vee’s always envied catch the entrance hall half-light like mirrors. It’s a peaceful moment, and yet her instincts are screaming that something is wrong, because —

    Camila Noceda can’t — shouldn’t — be crying.

(Crying isn’t for adults. It’s for girls like her.)
