The Torchbearer lingered at the camp’s entrance, unsteady on his feet as he handed his torch off to a waiting pair of hands. He didn’t feel like he could step into the chaos, almost as if crossing the threshold meant facing the reality that he’d come back from Dema without Clancy by his side.
His vision had been blurred the whole way back, and he’d hidden at the rear of the group to avoid the feeling of sympathetic gazes on him for the entire journey.
He could’ve kicked himself. Where had it gone wrong? Torch was so sure that this time things would be different, that he and Clancy could return to the camp, take Jenna and Debby in their arms and thank the lucky stars that all four of them had made it through the whole ordeal. Instead, he waited alone, wondering just how he was going to say that their beloved Clancy had chosen a different path.
