Summary
Mike gazed out over the lake as they steadied the boat, sitting down on the old, splintered planks which served as benches. The gate ripped like fire across the water. The authorities had long since stopped placing security alongside the entire edge of the tear in the earth. It just sat, smoldering, hellish. Somehow gravity played into this whole thing, and the water of the lake… hadn’t fallen through the gate.
The beach they pushed off from was actually oddly tranquil.
Will grabbed the paddles. “God, we should’ve at least left a note or something-”
“Will.” Mike said seriously. “You can go back if you want. I wouldn’t blame you.”
“No, no, I- it’s just bad in there, Mike.”
What had he been thinking? Mike suddenly felt incredibly guilty. Pulling Will back into the Upside Down after what’d happened-
“Shit, Will. I didn’t even think,” Mike said anxiously. “If you-”
Will looked him dead in the eyes. “Absolutely not. I'm not going anywhere.” He began shrugging off his jacket.
Mike’s heart did something funny in his chest. “Cool.”

Mike shrinks back. “What?”
He hadn’t meant to say it. He wouldn’t have, if he’d stopped to think about it for half a second. But it’s too late to take it back, and he can’t breathe until he knows the answer, and he looks at him resolutely and says, “Do you only love her because of what I said?”
Something darkens on Mike’s face, twisting it into a shape Will’s never seen. “Get out.”
It’s not a no.

“Will!”
Will felt it before he saw it. In one swift motion, a vine wrapped around his ankle, pulling him down to the hard wood of the dock’s structure.
His chin hit the planks, pain shooting through his jaw and the taste of blood flowing in before he even felt the warmth of it. The ringing in his ears was unbearable, with the vine twisting more and more around his foot. All the air he just inhaled was gone, leaving him to do nothing more than let out a breathy scream –
“Mike!”
