Benrey can feel Gordon’s old shit staring at him, its oppressive gaze telling Benrey ‘you have to unpack this shit sooner or later’ which, ironically, is a great metaphor for all the emotional shit he needs to unpack as well. He should ask an English professor to analyze his life or something.

Curiosity got the better, and Malcolm made his way over, leaving a seat between him and the other. He ordered a drink and waited a moment before clearing his throat. "Do I know you? I swear I've seen you before." The man's eyes met his, and he snickered a bit before he looked away. "Some pickup line, pal. I've only heard that one a million times before." He sipped his drink, almost red-pink in hue. The man's accent was unmistakably east-coast, though that was as far as it could be placed.

"Well," says the man who Tommy's pretty sure is the reason he saw the G-Man this morning, "Tommy's like, five."
Tommy starts to be horribly offended— before the drilled-in panic of being recognized as a Being outside of the timestream cuts that off, which is in turn aborted by the multi-dimensional math necessary to work out how old he is in relation to the jumps, so by the time he finally manages to say, "What year is it?"
...He's saying it to nobody.
(In 2020, Tommy is kind of six-and-a-half, kind of newly thirty-seven, and kind of extremely hateful of the trains that take him between enough time periods that it's difficult to remember either of those numbers. This fic mostly looks at the years before then, though.)
