He expects Bucky to avoid the question, come up with all sorts of excuses. What he doesn’t expect is for Bucky to start laughing.
“C’mon, Sam. Seriously?”
“Yes, seriously.”
“Sam,” Bucky finally says, slow and deliberate. “I’m not interested in anyone you’ve tried to set me up with because I’ve been gone on you for ages.”

If Bucky not texting Sam was where the problem started, this is where the problem becomes apparent and Bucky realizes the consequences of his actions — or non-action, as it is.
There’s no one sound that clues Bucky in to what is occurring just through the wall from him, but taken together they are unmistakable.
It’s the snick of a bottle cap, the squeeze of a thick liquid coming out. The rustle of the blankets as Sam shifts. His breathing going deep and purposefully measured, and the rate of his heartbeat — which Bucky can only just make out, might not manage to at all if it was anyone other than Sam, who he’s so attuned to — increasing.

Sam strips down to his briefs, slips on his sweats because he’s a gentleman like that, thank you very much, then rolls onto his side of the bed where he comes face-to-face with Bucky.
“Uh.” Sam blinks. Bucky blinks back at him. “You’re gonna turn around, right?” Sam asks. If they’re really being forced to share a bed, he refuses to be the little spoon.
“I’m taller,” Bucky says immediately.
“We’re the same height.”
“Nah, I’m definitely taller.”
“Why does that even matter?” Sam asks incredulously.
