Summary
One year before the War of the Ring, a woman from Harad and her troupe of travelling minstrels are captured in Mirkwood by the elusive Wood-elves for trespassing. As they stand before King Thranduil, he offers them a chance at freedom--if they play for him. But when the Woodland Realm becomes fixated by the woman's haunting Haradrim love songs, the minstrels discover that elven realms can be very difficult to leave. With time running out to get to the kingdom of Dale before Mordor attacks, they must choose between fulfilling their duty and succumbing to the dangerous allure of the elvenking.

-Gimli, The Return of the KingThroughout the Lord of the Rings trilogy, Legolas the elf and Gimli the dwarf are established as a surprising friendship – two characters from cultures traditionally at odds and families with unpleasant history, who cleave to one another and develop a great and surprising love that will carry them beyond the shores of Middle-earth. They are established as parallels early and often throughout the narrative, echoing one another’s words and sharing one another’s company – and throughout the course of the book, they begin to change one another even as they draw ever closer together. Here, I trace not only their journey from unfamiliarity to love, but also their differing – and changing – approaches to the past and the future. Though they begin with very different (and historically-influenced) views and connections to the past and future, they change one another’s approaches – and entwine their fates with one another.
