Summary
“I want you to listen to me,” Charles fingers slide up and down on Edwin's collarbone in what he hopes is a comforting way. Charles is glad at this moment that ghosts can still feel each other, a small win against all that is deprived of them when they die. “you, Edwin Payne, are my best mate. That will never change. You are the most important person in the world to me, and I can’t really say that like..I am in love with you,” An image of his father smashing his head into a mirror flashes through his mind unwillingly, and Charles has to fight the urge to flinch. “but there is no one else, no one else, that I would go to Hell for and we’ve got..we’ve got literally forever to figure out what the rest means. As long as we get out of here, ok?” Charles feels the words exit his mouth before he can even process them fully, and yet they feel like some of the most important words he will ever say.
Edwin smiles in a way Charles has not seen since they were back in Port Townsend and he thinks that maybe his truth was enough to make Edwin feel as loved as he is.
Even still, Charles wishes he could have said what he really wanted to hear.
He doesn’t know if he will ever be able to.
