Open air beneath his feet, and he was falling.
In the few seconds it took him to feel fully present, he’d slammed into a branch and slipped off for his back to hit another one.
Breath knocked out of him, McCoy wheezed at the leaf-dotted blue sky above him, before lunging to grab the wrist of ensign Damis as he spotted her falling.
Her weight wrenched him off his spot and it was a tumbling journey through a few more branches before one was big enough to not snap under their weight.
He hit the branch, on his stomach, and his arm hit one branching off of it.
Damis’s weight slammed his forearm across the branch, and the sound of something snapping was unfortunately not the branch.
A spike of agony and numbness, his hand opened, and Damis fell.
A thousand thoughts pummeled through his head.
A horrified ‘I dropped her!’
A panicked ‘where the hell is Spock?’
