Lan Zhan doesn’t think about him anymore.
The days when he would obsess over every tiny work Wei Ying appeared in are long gone. His days of buying every magazine he was in, of taping his interviews and watching them over and over again just to get a piece of the real him, they’re all over. Lan Zhan doesn’t follow every project Wei Ying is a part of anymore, doesn’t try to find out if Wei Ying ever mentioned him anywhere, and doesn’t keep the TV on just in case he hears Wei Ying’s voice in a new commercial.
He has weeks, and even months, when Wei Ying doesn’t even cross his mind at all. And when he does, it is only with a faded kind of fondness, a simmering affection to the memories they shared together.
He’s happy for the things Wei Ying achieved. There is almost no hurt at all, almost no pain. And almost must be just as good as none.

Lan Qiren looked around, his gaze stuck somewhere above Wei Wuxian’s head, most likely the half-ruined summoning array behind him – fucking stupid, Wei Wuxian should’ve gotten rid of it immediately. Just why did it have to be a Lan summoning him, why Lan Qiren his visitor at the door? Wasn’t death enough punishment?
“Wei Wuxian?” Lan Qiren asked wearily.

On camera, Lan Zhan has everything. A picture perfect life with a doting boyfriend, a posh downtown apartment with a gorgeous view, and 10 million subscribers that pay for their lifestyle. He has Sunday morning brunch, a sunlit studio where he composes, and romantic dinners on rooftop cafes. He has it all, as long as it's on camera.
Off camera, he has a failed relationship whose ending must be timed perfectly. January, according to their publicist. He feels like a prisoner, their posh downtown apartment slowly suffocating the life out of him.
So when his brother begs him to come back for the summer, it's not a hard decision to make. Until he meets a fellow instructor and is pulled kicking and screaming into a confrontation with his past-- an unrequited first love and a lost friendship.

The kid’s barely out of the car when his parents speed off, kicking up a cloud of dirt that drifts into Wei Ying’s summer charge’s hair. It’s almost funny, but only almost. The kid’s a scrawny thing, more scowl than person. He hefts his bag and says snottily, “I’m Mo Xuanyu, and I’m here as punishment.”
"Gotcha!" Wei Ying says brightly. “And what did you do that’s so bad you have to spend all summer on our little farm?”
An even bigger scowl. It’s threatening to take over his entire body. It’s cute.
“I told the truth.”
“Mm, and what’s that?”
Mo Xuanyu juts his jaw. Thirteen-year-olds are funny. “I’m gay. And if you don’t like it, you can go fuck yourself.”
