Hiccup had gone missing from the Edge two weeks ago: he went out on a patrol, said he’d be back in an hour or two, and that was the last anyone had seen of him. Toothless was found with a twisted, tattered wing on a scrap of a sea stack a day later, screaming with what was left of his roar. Astrid tried not to let herself be overtaken by terror, but it was there all the same. Hiccup had made powerful enemies: he had a freakish knack for that as well. Those enemies had armadas at their command, weapons that could shoot their dragons out of the sky, cages that no beast could melt. Hiccup was a valuable prize indeed to anyone who was an enemy of dragons.
(In which Hiccup is taken by an enemy the gang has never faced before. Waking him up isn’t the end to their problems, but only the beginning.)

Hiccup dreaded returning to Dragon's Edge. As he flew on Toothless' back through the clouds, he couldn't help but reflect on the days events.
It had been months since he had lost the Dragon Eye to Viggo and the dragon hunters, and his guilt was eating him alive. He always felt on edge now. Not that he was ever an especially calm person, but this took it to a whole new level. He found himself consumed by the fear of what Viggo could be planning.
Astrid, and everyone for that matter, felt the impacts of Viggo obtaining the Dragon Eye a few months ago. Although they hadn't been attacked since, the threat loomed over their heads, casting a shadow over the Edge. Astrid also noticed as it impacted Hiccup more than the others. His heightened weariness didn't come as a shock to her. Everyone was extra cautious at first. But as time went on, she noticed as the stress began to get to him more than the others.

Takes place around RTTE S3 E1. I felt like Hiccup was acting a bit uncharacteristic in this episode and wanted to explore why, and fill in some of the gaps between seasons 2 and 3.
