Summary
Kent can’t remember exactly when it happened, because it happened slowly. It was the year before they turned eighteen, when Jack Zimmermann shot up like a weed, from barely taller than Kent to almost towering above him.
He knew it was kind of shallow, only noticing his best friend after he got hot, but he couldn’t help it.

Erica Bittle had never been so happy as to have been born a girl. Just the though of being a boy and having her interests- figure skating, baking, Beyoncé- it was enough to make her shudder. And the whole being gay thing? Much easier to hide as a girl. Girls kissed their friends. Girls looked at other girls in the locker room. Sure, she still got shoved in a few lockers, but nothing so bad as the boys got.
Jacqueline Zimmermann, on the other hand, had never been so cursed as to be born a girl.

Don and Kathy would move in together. They would have a dog or two and then inevitably, a small parade of adorable little brats who would call him Uncle Cosmo, and they would spend less and less time with him, not on purpose but busy with the rest of their lives, and ultimately Cosmo would learn to make his peace with it because he’d have no other choice and he would have to try to move on and not live too much in his memories. He could picture it so clearly, he figured if the songwriting gig with Monumental didn’t pan out, he could always return to the backwater circuit with a new act: The Amazing Cosmo of the Cosmos—ladies and gentlemen, he sees the future, he reads the stars, he silently pines for his best married pal and all the while tap dancing!
Don and Kathy inviting him along on their honeymoon, though—that part was a surprise.

Jaq Zimmermann is not cute. Jaq Zimmermann is beautiful, high cheekbones and blue eyes, dark hair and pale skin, like an honest-to-god Snow White — that is, if Snow White happened to be 5'10, French Canadian, and incredibly rude.
Can't win 'em all, Erica guesses, although Jaq sure does win an awful lot.

For a split second Jack thinks he spoke his thoughts out loud, but then he realises — that wasn’t his voice.
He turns, looking down at his left winger, and all the breath disappears from his lungs at the wide-eyed way Bitty is staring at Kent. It’s not the starstruck, ‘oh my god it’s Kent Parson’ face that Jack is all too familiar with. It’s gobsmacked and a little bit horrified and knowing. And that nickname, no one but Jack and his parents ever used that nickname, but somehow it sounds effortless in that southern drawl.
What the hell??

Jack is not the only one with a past he doesn't like to talk about. When Kent Parson comes crashing back into their lives, Bitty expects an implosion, but instead it begins something he never thought possible. As the three boys learn to lower the boundaries they've put up around their hearts, they grow closer together, and soon their heartbreak takes on an entirely different form - one that can never resolve happily for all three of them.
