Kojiro’s brows lift in helpless confusion. “Kaoru?”
Kaoru huffs out an exasperated breath and lets his hands drop. “If you had just told me that we were dating, I wouldn’t have had to go through all this trouble.”
Kojiro’s mouth falls open again.
A long silence stretches.
Kaoru waits with a raised eyebrow.
“...dating?” Kojiro finally squeaks out in a horrendously high-pitched voice.

Kaoru shrugged and took a bite of chocolate caramel cake. His whole expression instantly went soft. Kojiro recognized that look, and he fully appreciated what it meant when Kaoru immediately cut off a much bigger bite of cake and popped it in his mouth.
“That good, huh?”
Kaoru looked up at Kojiro with a sharp expression, clearly planning some cutting retort, but when he tried to speak, all that came out was, “Mmf.” Apparently, the huge bite of caramel had his mouth stuck shut. Kaoru’s eyes went wide, then his face morphed into an expression of impotent rage. He was glaring at Kojiro ferociously, but any intimidating effect was completely neutralized by the fact that his cheeks were so full he looked like a chipmunk in a pink wig. To top it off, he had a small smear of chocolate on one corner of his mouth. He looked so cute Kojiro could hardly stand it.
“God, I love you, Kaoru.”
The declaration sounded loud in the almost-empty restaurant. Kojiro realized with a start that he was the one who’d made it.

“How long,” Kaoru interrupts quietly. “How long has it been this time, Kojiro?”
Kojiro can’t quite hide his wince from Kaoru’s unrelenting stare. “Only a week or so—”
Reki slams his hands on the table. “THIS TIME?” he shrieks. “What—this isn’t your first time getting hanahaki?”
Kojiro laughs awkwardly, finally pulling his eyes away from Kaoru even as Kaoru continues glowering. “I had a brief stint with it in high school, once—”
“Brief,” Kaoru scoffs. “You were hacking out your lungs for an entire year.”
Kojiro frowns. “Was it really that long? It felt so much shorter…” He trails off at Kaoru’s scowl. He coughs. “Anyway, I didn’t want to hide it this time. It was a pain to try and not cough in front of Kaoru for so long last time.”
“You lasted two weeks before I found out,” Kaoru mutters.
