Over the centuries, there developed in the Circle of Magi a tradition of showing affection, regard and intent through the giving of small, practical trinkets. It became a way to dodge any suspicion from the Circle authorities--who could object to the gift of some paper, or a single coin?

Summary
Hubert is walking out of a war council when he coughs the first time. It is spring, and the flower petal that lands in his palm could easily have been blown into his mouth from any of the surrounding trees, and so he thinks nothing of it.
It’s when the second cough hits him in the dining hall over dinner that he realizes something is wrong. Ferdinand claps him firmly on the back, clearly assuming he’s choking, and he shoves him away.
“I’m alright,” he says, trying not to stare too obviously at the flower petal in his hand. “I swallowed wrong, there’s no need to be dramatic.”
“People die of choking every day,” Ferdinand says, and then he launches into a story about his great-uncle choking on a piece of ham. Usually Hubert tries to listen to his rambling, but today he has more important things to focus on.
He looks up at Lady Edelgard, who has just taken a seat across from him, and he thinks I am going to die.
In a world where there is no cure for Hanahaki, Hubert is certain he's dying of love for his emperor. Will he realize in time that his heart truly lies with another?
