A quiet noise almost made her jump. Across the floor, into the kitchen, a suffocating wash of sadness banished the light and Lorraine’s heart sank. From a ghostly figure sitting at the kitchen table came a woman’s crying, low and mournful and accented with high little sobs.
From the doorway, careful not to startle, Lorraine murmured, “Hello.”
The woman at the table turned, revealing wide eyes and short curls of light hair. She pulled on the shoulders of her robe and sniffled, trembling.
