Summary
“Come here,” he said. So close to a plea. “Everything else aside, just…come here, Nes. I’m still here.”
He wasn’t—he’d been more distant than ever. Coming to bed late, and leaving for the dining room before she even had the chance to wake up properly. It felt like their last conversation had been ages ago, before the girl fell onto Rhys’ lawn.
She remembered the night before it all happened. Their last night together: her hands held above her head, and him smiling and whispering words against her neck while he made love to her.
“You are the most precious thing in the world to me,” he’d said, under the bright moonlight.
She missed his steady presence, and the physical comfort he gave so easily.
She missed him.

Summary
All she knows with absolute clarity is that she is burning. That she feels white-hot anger sluicing through her veins, that silver fire stoked higher and higher as Cassian’s words barrel into her like a battering ram.
“Well, everyone fucking hates you, so well done, Nes.”
Nes. Everything seems to quiet. As if what he just said is of no consequence at all. As if the little nickname has no effect. As if she hasn’t asked him to stop calling her that more times than she can count. Everyone fucking hates you. All at once, the anger is replaced by hurt. It starts small, a fissure in her heart that travels through her body like a spider crack.
_______________
Cassian’s words affect Nesta so deeply that she closes herself off from him, from the inevitable hurt he will inflict. Will Cassian be able to convince Nesta of his feelings, or will they crash and burn?

Summary
Masks had always been familiar to Nesta Archeron.
Less shiny, less deadly than the one that occasionally framed her face, these were smaller, meant for everyday wear that hid her identity in different, more vital ways.
‘Stop bouncing on your toes, Nesta. Stay still.’
The earliest effort – to stop her body from constantly moving. Constantly needing to sway or rock up and down, be it at tea, or on the promenade.
‘Sound sweet when you talk. Simpering. No one likes a monotone. And for my sake, smile.’
The bane of her mother’s existence – that her voice was not light and melodic, like Feyre’s, but rather deep-toned and inherently cold. How her face rested in a perpetual scowl regardless of her mood.
‘Watch me, copy me. That’s right.’

Summary
“Children would liven the place up,” Azriel said, when Cassian had commented how quiet the House of Wind was one morning.
Her mate had brushed it off with a laugh, but Nesta began to wonder if he was simply holding his tongue. If he, too, desired to stop taking contraceptives and try.
It took a long time, she’d been told. Years, even.
And still, she closed her eyes and saw those women. Saw her sister. And her body revolted.
They never discussed it. Never voiced aloud whether or not either of them agreed with their family’s teasing – whether the idea of a child had become too tempting to ignore. Other than her initial declaration, at the beginning of all of this, that she wanted to wait a long, long while, they never had the conversation.
Instead, Cassian was content to brush off the teasing remarks with a smile, as if it were nothing.
And Nesta was content to keep drinking her tonics like clockwork, as if were everything.
