Summary
“No.” The word sounds suspiciously like a growl, like it was spoken through jutting fangs, and Lydia’s chest aches. Not with empathy; she can’t even begin to understand what Cora is going through, can’t pretend that she knows how it feels to have the moon under your skin, tugging like embedded fishhooks.
But her heart aches nonetheless, because that’s what happens when someone you love is in pain: you feel it too. Perhaps the pain is quieter, but you feel it too.
Cora’s head emerges from the blanket again, and when she continues, there’s only the rasp of thirst present in her voice. “Please don’t leave, Lydia.”
