The question is asked as Jeno spins him around, and Jeno thanks his lucky stars that Jaemin can't see his flinch.
“I,” Jeno clears his throat. “I'm sorry, Nana. Habit.”
It's a lame excuse, he knows. They both do. That habit has waned off a long time ago. But to call Jaemin with a name no one else dares to refer to him with, in such a tender moment… he doesn't think his heart can take it.
Because the man in his arms is not meant to be his.
Or: Lee Jeno is a knight. Na Jaemin is his king. Somewhere along the way, that line blurs a little, and Jeno finds himself falling for a man who is destined for someone else.

“Yeah.” Jeno pauses, as if waiting for a response, but none comes. “He offered me a deal.”
“...What kind?”
Jeno stays silent for a few seconds, gathering his thoughts, trying to thread a dangerous line. “Either I step up as the new Head or… Well, marry an omega.”
“You're gonna go with the second option.”
It's not meant to come out accusatory. It's supposed to serve as a question; for Jaemin to reassure Jeno that he fully supports his decision.
It does anyway.
Or: Jaemin is a skilled killer, beta, and above all, Jeno's bodyguard. Neither of them planned on falling in love with each other, yet here they are.

Jaemin stays silent for a while before lifting the mic to his mouth, his hand gripping Jeno’s like it’s his lifeline.
“I’d say... ‘may the odds be in your favor,’ but that would be a lie, wouldn’t it? It has never been in our favor. The battlefield is cruel, but whatever you do, do not lose yourself. That is all.”
“You may survive the Games, but you can’t ever leave it. He understands it perfectly now. The guilt of killing other people still gnaws at his heart, it feels wrong to be here after he bloodied his hands. A murderer shouldn’t be looked up upon, they should be shunned and locked away in a jail cell.
He shouldn’t be here.

But at this moment, his heart thunders even more than it ever has.

His hand shoots up quicker than anyone else’s in the field. Barely taking in a breath, he yells,
