    Summary

“There’s only six of us left,” Minhee’s hoarse voice derails Woobin’s train of thought, and he is deathly still under the arm Woobin has draped over his chest, holding him with a hand over his heart. His next words are so fragile, Woobin is glad he cannot see Minhee’s face. “Will I still be alive in the morning?”

Woobin could break Minhee’s neck with one hand. It would be easy, to move his hand a few inches up and choke the life out him where they are lying, watch the light drain from his gentle doe eyes. One less person in the way of the final victory.

    But he doesn’t.

    Bookmarker's Notes

After pacing an empty practice room (one of the small vocal rooms, so he's really just been spinning in a circle), he's come to the conclusion that he does need to go home soon. His logical side knows that there's no point in him being here if he's going to get no work done. The side that he's calling the unhelpful one or perhaps delusional one, instead, reminds him that Woobin told him not to be home late. Even though they end up at the same conclusion, he's sending a legion of the little green army men that run his brain to hit that side with a hammer.

"Everything's fine," he says out loud to a poster of Shownu modelling a bottle of iced tea, haphazardly stuck to the wall. Shownu assures him everything is fine, and he works up the courage to head home.

He considers seeing if Serim is around to run home with, though decides to pass, worried Serim will somehow get him to talk, or worse, sense Wonjin's antsy energy and make him run even faster than usual.

A long walk with music will fix it all, he feels. He can do this. Shownu believes in him.

    Minhee smiles, small and sweet.

“You’re getting used to this,” he says.

Who taught you all this? Who have you loved? Jungmo will ask one day, maybe- for now he just pushes that thought back whenever it comes up. He has Minhee now, is the thing. That’s really all that matters.

“Sort of,” he says instead, and leans in so his nose bumps against Minhee’s and he can feel the warmth of Minhee’s breath over his own mouth. Jungmo keeps his eyes open even though everything is blurry.

Minhee closes the gap between them, his small smile never fading.

    Summary

“There’s something for you in the glove compartment,” Minhee says quietly. He looks calm but Seongmin starts to feel dread. He knows Minhee well enough to know that this serious tone is more ominous than anything else.

Seongmin reaches for the glove box and opens it. There’s a pearl-colored envelope. To Seongminnie, it says on the front. The handwriting is clear but not neat, like someone trying to write each stroke with careful precision, someone afraid to mess up the characters of Seongmin’s name. There is only one person Seongmin knows that writes like this.

He glances at Minhee, who doesn’t look back at him. So this is why.

“Did you ever tell anyone about that day?” Allen says softly like he doesn’t want anyone else to hear this. Seongmin leans in, only stopping before he’s almost nose-to-nose with Allen.

“No,” Seongmin whispers back. “Did you?” He doesn’t know why he asked— he could never bear it if Allen said yes, if Allen had told Serim or one of the other members years later, if Allen had told anyone at all.

Allen shakes his head and he starts to smile, a small knowing one.

Wonjin’s right; Allen is his favorite hyung, but not because he’s the nicest or doted on Seongmin the most. Allen is his favorite because he’s the only one Seongmin trusted in that way, the only one he could have given a part of himself to. The fact that Allen liked him the most is just a bonus.

Allen grins. “I guess it’s still our secret.” Our secret. Seongmin feels his throat clench. The secret that still binds them, one of the many roots entangling them together. Is there even a way out?

“After all these years…” Seongmin trails off. He doesn’t know where the sentence is going. Allen is looking at him expectantly, wide eyes blinking slowly. Everything is melting altogether. After all these years, you’ve never told anyone? After all these years, you’re still my favorite hyung. After all these years, I still…

They pass by a streetlight. The darkness doesn’t feel as scary with the streetlights lining the road; the night doesn’t feel as lonely when Allen is next to him.

    Bookmarker's Notes

Seongmin wraps his arms around Allen’s shoulders, burying his face in Allen’s chest. “Allen-hyung, you’re so cute.” Instead of being louder than usual, Seongmin is surprisingly muted, almost mumbling.

“You don’t have to be like that around me.” Allen wraps an arm around Seongmin’s back, still. After being around idols for so long, there was one thing Allen knew. Some people can just be themselves, unapologetically, whether or not a camera is around, but most people can’t. The lines people draw are all different, but Seongmin’s line has always been easy to find.

Sometimes, Seongmin comes close, smelling like something sweet and soap-like, and pulls Allen in to hold him, squealing about how cute Allen is. He hugs Allen, he sinks his face in Allen’s shoulder or his chest, he tugs on Allen’s arm, he clings onto Allen like he’s a lone raft in the ocean and the smell of his shampoo floods Allen’s nose until there’s nothing else Allen’s breathing in but Seongmin. But when the camera points away, when the lights are all off, Seongmin drifts away, never getting quite as close. He becomes more like a mirage; present but impossible to grasp.

What do people think of when they watch Seongmin on camera? They might see Seongmin’s smile, his expressions on stage, or even his bickering with the others behind the scenes. But behind the scenes isn’t behind the camera— will anyone know about the way Seongmin sighs in his arms, the way Seongmin’s hair falls into his face, the way Seongmin smells?
