    The last time he’d heard John’s voice take that tone, it had been when he was grieving Mary. He’d been heartbroken, half the man he usually was as he’d curled himself around the remaining shreds of his heart. It had been so awful, and it had taken so much time for John to recover, and Sherlock had sworn to himself never to let John get so hurt again. To never allow John to feel so torn apart that he was barely there any more.

     

    Only now he’d been the one to hurt him.

     

    His arrow had reached its target, but not without first piercing through John’s chest.
