Summary
Alex minutely registers the way his hands are now trembling, but he chalks it up to how tight he's been holding them. That, he assumes, at least makes sense. So is the way his heart is lodged in his throat right now in a way that makes him feel like he's going to puke if he so much as opens his mouth.
He listens for signs of anything out in the hallway, but Alex can't make out anything new save for the incessant buzzing he figures must be part of some alarm.
He tugs at his collar, suddenly tight and uncomfortable, popping a few more buttons than he already has undone. "It's really hot in here," he says breathily, the back of his neck beginning to heat up.
Henry turns toward him. "It's—Alex? Are you alright?"

Summary
Alex's arms are linked around his neck from behind, brushing his fingertips back and forth against the exposed skin of Henry's collarbone where his shirt dips. He rides the rise and fall of Alex's breaths like a wave, imagines himself melting into this embrace permanently. He'd take the rocks and sink all the way down, down, down into Alex's heart if he'd let him.
That is, if the Crown didn't pull him right back out. Even if he kicked and screamed, no one would hear him. No one but Alex, he supposes. It's a heartbreaking thought.
Princes aren't supposed to be gay.

Summary
"The bird fucking bit me," Alex tells her before she can get a word out.
June blinks. "What?"
"And I'm bleeding."
"What?" She repeats.
Alex just holds up his hand, the bundle of tissues now somewhat sticking to his wound.
"Alex," she starts, exasperated, "what the actual fuck?"
On the evening of Wednesday, November 27th, 2019, the First Son of the United States, Alexander Claremont-Diaz, sustained minor injuries after contact with a wild turkey. Out of abundance of caution, Mr. Claremont-Diaz was transported to Walter Reed Medical Center for evaluation and treatment, as is protocol after contact with a wild animal.
Or, Alex is dramatic, (definitely) antagonizes a turkey, and everyone thinks he's overreacting.

Summary
“Constant fear is debilitating,” Alex tells him later on. The sun has risen, though it’s barely prominent through the dark clouds in the sky. “Even in the world we live in now, you need to find the things that make it feel…normal.”
Of course, Alex isn’t even sure that makes much sense, and he thinks about doubling back on what he just said with something stupid and word-vomitty, whatever pops into his head first, but Henry beats him to it. Much more suitable, and it puts Alex’s mind at ease:
“I’m starting to think you’re right.”
The world ended three years ago. No more all-night study sessions, no more drag brunch and mimosas, no more societal expectations.
But out of everything Alex was expecting from an apocalypse, Henry sure as hell wasn't it.

Summary
Prince Henry is somehow both everything and nothing like Alex expected him to be. He looks perfect, even though he is staring at his phone when Alex enters the room and takes a seat far out of the way.
And then Prince Henry looks up, his eyes darting around as if he has no clue where he is, and lands on Alex’s face. There’s nothing there, though. No curiousness, no interest, no disdain, not a shimmer of any emotion. Prince Henry just looks at him with a blank stare until Mrs Hughes takes it upon herself to introduce Alex.
“Henry,” the man responds. His eyes widen for a second before his face falls into a closed expression and says: “pleasure,” as if it’s anything but, and looks away.
Right.
Rude.---
Life has been throwing many challenges at Alex. The biggest one so far is becoming a single father. That might change, now that Alex has started a job as a solicitor for His Royal Highness Prince Henry.
Prince Henry turns out to be different than Alex thought at first, and it doesn’t take long for them to become friends.
But is that all they can be?---

He turns on instinct, just in time to catch sight of their daughter— their tiny, precious, perfect three-year-old who’s due to start swimming lessons next summer but at the moment relies on floaties that she isn’t currently wearing— teetering on the corner of the dock, her light-up tennis shoes all the way at its furthest edge.
Ice-cold fear tears through Alex and in the same instant that Henry calls out their daughter’s name, he watches as she loses her fragile balance and tumbles headfirst into the glittering water of the lake.

Summary
Henry is a boring person.
This is an objective fact. It’s been such a constant in his life that it hardly bothers him. He prefers the mundane. Thrives under routine. Tolerates many things poorly: surprise parties, capsaicin, loud noises.
Another objective fact: Henry loves Alex. Alex is not boring at all.
Unfortunately, everyone else in Henry’s life seems to think that a bore like him is incapable of a relationship like theirs— and, more distressingly, that this must mean that Alex simply doesn’t exist.
Or: Five times that no one believed that Henry and Alex were an item, and one time that they all did.

“Sorry,” she said, not sounding very sorry at all. Henry made a mental note to teach her how to at least pretend to be contrite.
“You’re… she - you can speak English?”
Henry looked up. The man was turned towards him now. His eyes were the first thing Henry noticed. Wide and a deep brown, with impossibly long and dark eyelashes that seemed to touch his cheeks every time he blinked. And his mouth - it was open now in surprise and disbelief, but it was perfectly curved and bitten pink, and Henry had no problem picturing it curled into a smirk. A handsome serial killer, then.
Single dad Henry loses his daughter at the Met and ends up finding more than he bargained for.
