“That haircut,” Tony says, “looks absolutely terrible on you.”
He doesn’t miss the flash of surprise that crosses Steve’s face, like he’s shocked that Tony even noticed he’s there. He smooths the page out and looks up. For a minute, he doesn’t say anything, just looks, sitting like that with his cheek against his fist, and Tony doesn’t manage to hold his gaze for too long.

Because that’s what Viktor is, in the end – silently challenging and unperceived and an unresolved force of nature. As a scientist, Jayce cannot sit by and let a seemingly unsolvable conundrum with countless unknown variables be.

Viktor almost wants to laugh at the irony of it all, even as petals and thorns threaten to choke him into silence. For all his efforts to get rid of these measly feelings, it seems fate, in a cruel twisted sense of humour, wanted to remind him that no matter how hard he tries, no matter how much of himself he butchers and sacrifices along the way, he cannot escape them. But he will keep trying anyhow.
