A grinning face eclipsed the light sneaking through the canopy. His eyes wide and shining like their own suns. Langa forced his gaze shut, near certain he was to die. To be captured by something of hell was to take the path of the gallows. There was no surviving an encounter like this. No matter how soft the song had been.
A warmth caressed the palm of his hand. Curling between his fingers like it had before. “Promise you won’t kill me?”
Cream cloth fell from the Nymph’s chest, the makeshift hood nesting at the back of his neck as he leaned over. The fire in his veins made a pattern like threads of silk winding down his arm until it reached the hand interlocked with his own. The skin was soft. Calloused and scorched but soft like finely grained sand. Putting his trust in such hands was dangerous. It could get him killed. Yet still he nodded, swearing an oath that would bind them for far longer than he knew.
