“You’re going to wake the whole neighborhood if you keep this up,” she hisses, leaning out—her chest pressed to the windowsill, the pressure already making her feel queasy. Clear stands again, another rock in her hand, and Kimberly’s eyes widen. “Stop that!”
Clear takes a step close, letting her single rock fall to the floor. Even from here, Kimberly hears the thud of it against the damp grass. She cups her hands over her mouth—not as concerned as Kimberly about being quiet, or waking up the whole neighbourhood.
“Then hurry up,” she calls back, “I’m not leaving without you.”

But Misty doesn't wake up. No curtain drops to put an end to this theater. Nat doesn't step forward and bows to the applause for her performance. This is real and Nat is dying and Misty killed her. The recognition is ice water in her veins.
