Summary
Regulus knew, even before he entered the cave, that he had zero chances of making it out. He had accepted that fact; he had made his decision (he had also made plans for if he did manage to survive, even when he knew they would not be used). If his life was what it would take to make the chess pieces in this Merlin-forsaken war move in favor of defeating Voldemort, he could give it. He had hardly done much good with it, after all.
The truth was, though, that Regulus Black did not care for the war, not in the way someone who is preparing to give his life for it to end should; the truth is he was doing it all for Sirius, even if his brother never got to know of it.
