Jiang Cheng shuddered, looking at the ground and noticing that Yanli had left a basket and a bag with the baby’s things. “Oh my God!”
Xichen stared at him strangely.
“If it makes you feel better, you’re not the first or the last man in the world to discover parenthood this way…”
“What? — Cheng blinked several times. — That baby isn’t mine.”
“Uh-huh… sure. Everyone says that. — Xichen picked up the baby with the utmost ease, rocking him and making him stop crying almost immediately. — Come here, little one, your dad didn’t mean to make you cry.”
Hearing this, Cheng raised his hands to the sky in a gesture of frustration.
“That’s absurd…”
“Shhh! — Xichen shot him a hard look. — Even a baby can be traumatized by paternal rejection.”
“I am not the father of that child!”
“Oh, please. He looks like you; even the shape of his eyes is similar…”
After taking a deep breath to regain his composure, Jiang Cheng decided it was time to clarify that confusion once and for all.

"Anger had finally bubbled up at the surface and determined young Jiang Cheng had pressed on his wound with bitter resignation, as a form of punishment. Bile had burned his throat but at this point, he had forgone sleep and sanity. The pain sizzled up his leg, up and up past his stuttering heart, and right into his tired mind. It had silenced everything as effectively as Zidian tearing through flesh. He kept pressing on it curiously. He felt the stabs of pain dancing in tune with his pulse. His body had taken over for him. The thoughts receded as a primal part of his mind focused on the perceived threat, the pain thrumming quietly.
Thump, thump, thump.
Somehow he had finally succumbed to slumber. The next day to his severe disappointment the wound had healed and he had dismissed this bout of insanity as a conjuring of his tired mind.
Yet, here he is, years later, chasing the same thrill, that glimpse of madness that calmed his racing mind. He hadn’t forgotten it. He couldn’t."
