It takes years before Steph sits up straight, suddenly, at her desk, and throws up right across her spread of chemistry notes as it hits her. As she realizes exactly what she didn't have the knowings to know.
She is four, she is six, she is fifteen, she is eight. She is twelve and she is a thousand years old.
She is body and fear and shaking and spell-speaking, and when her teacher waves a hand in front of her face, Stephanie lunges out of the chair, neck over ass over teakettle over heels, melting onto the floor, crashing under the wave. Steph scrambles to the door. No hall pass. No permission. She is out of the building running with no words to be found before anyone can snatch her, grab her, dig their nails in high up on her arm. She runs for the only place this body can think to run--without her, carrying her.
Her body takes her home.

"I…want to be a better detective. So…that guy? You and Bruce, um, quote him sometimes. Sher--” Cass trailed off, trying to remember. It was a weird name.
“Sherlock Holmes? Oh yes! I think you’d really like it.”
Cass is struggling with reading, and when she asks Babs to read to her, Oracle is delighted to oblige. Reading sessions with Babs start becoming a regular thing, Stephanie gets involved, and Cass discovers new things about her family through their literary tastes.
(I've got ideas for more little vignettes focusing on Cass and Babs, so if anyone enjoys this, please let me know! It could motivate me to make it a series!)
