Summary
In freshman year of high school, Danny pulled away from his friends without explanation.
At sixteen, he disappeared. Sam and Tucker presumed him dead. His parents insisted he was taken by ghosts.
As young adults, they run into him in Gotham, of all places. It's a stroke of luck that brings their best friend back to them.
If only it was that easy for the Bats to find the god damn engineer that's been running circles around them while they try to track him down.

Lucanis had never been so amused watching someone eat. She paused as she considered every bite, sometimes halving it, like she worried about taking too much though none of her bites could be considered anything but diminutive. She chewed thoroughly, vigorously, always with her fingers pressed to her lips to shield herself. She savored, letting out quiet little sounds of appreciation.
“Is that thyme?” she asked suddenly.
“It is.” He was surprised she could detect it. He had used the barest sprinkling, just enough to tame the bitterness of the onions.
A stirring in the back of his skull, movement from a phantom that had held himself so strangely patient that the absence of him was more jarring than his presence. Cook for her more.
A spark ignited in his chest, a need.

Rook swallows hard. She hates to admit it, but Spite… makes sense. Lucanis barely touches her without fear of being overpowered in a moment of vulnerability. But if his demon was given the chance to be responsible, if his worst fear was put to rest, would Lucanis see reason enough to finally open up to her? She shakes her head before caving anymore into this ridiculous plan.
“This is Lucanis’ body,” she says more firmly. “You can’t just run off in it without asking.”
“No more asking him!” Spite snapped. “Only you.”

Lucanis braced one hand against the wall above her head, coming close. Rook didn't move, didn't back away. "This isn't a good idea," he warned, looking down at her through half-lidded eyes.
It was clear from the way she held his stare, from the way she lifted a hand and rested the tips of her fingers on his chest, that he'd not been imagining the reciprocation in desire he’d sensed. His heart seemed to skip half a dozen beats as she tipped her chin ever so slightly to better meet his stare. "Sometimes a bad idea is better," she countered.
