“He told me he could give me the green I needed to get me out of Whale Island,” Gon explains. “But this isn’t the green that I was thinking of.”
Killua watches the tiny frog on the railing wave its limbs somberly, barely catching itself before it teeters off the side of the balcony. “You’re a prince,” he manages. ‘You have enough money of your own.”
Gon nods. “Oh, I know,” he says cheerfully. “But I always feel bad asking Aunt Mito for favors. Besides, I don’t think she’d let me take more than my monthly allowance if I said I was planning to abandon my princely responsibilities with it.”it's a pretty simple tale, really. ex-assassin meets prince. prince turns ex-assassin into a cat. ex-assassin and prince have to figure out a way to turn back before midnight. aside from the Zoldyck name hovering over ex-assassin's head and a curse hovering over the prince, nothing could go wrong, right?

Summary
Gon, who carries mountains on his shoulders and valleys in between his shoulder blades, who holds deep, cool ponds in the palm of his hands and planets in his eyes, grew up as a carbon copy of Whale Island. He is everything that Killua is not; Killua is a dirty rock tossed in a puddle, the water darkening and rippling away from his touch. He rots away instead of growing.
When Gon tugs Killua off the ship and introduces him to his home, his first thought is how startlingly out of place he is.

Gon had been his home at some point. He had broken Killua out of the Zoldyck mansion like a star crashing through the earth, his eyes steely and unmoving and gold and so bright it had stolen the breath from Killua's chest. And Killua, displaced for the first time his life, untethered to his family legacy, had no home to return to and so he looked for one in Gon. He built Gon up with high, gentle walls and tile floor and warm fire and made a home out of him, and that wasn't bad at all in and of itself.
But you can't make a home out of a person - a kid, much less, a boy as young and unstable as you - and expect it to stay up.or: killua, and what it means to have a home.

"It was only a chance, not a promise, and there were rules, and they were very strict. Killua hadn’t expected anything less, though. Every covenant had its conditions. But breaking these rules meant losing everything (losing Gon); there would be no second chances, there would be no leeway. One second of weakness would bring it all crashing down. So Killua held those rules, those conditions, as close to his heart as Kurapika kept his pointed chain; in either case, breaking them would have much the same effect."
In which Gon doesn't survive the aftermath of his fight with Pitou — but Killua still isn't giving up on him.
