In the far back corner of the hospital parking lot under the glare of a sodium lamp there’s a blue Toyota Tundra with three windows blown out. Bullet holes riddle the exterior. Two legs dangle over the edge of the hatch, still and limp. One bright red smear against the white toe cap of a sneaker.
“Theo?” Liam calls, clipped, hesitant. He’s bartering with minor gods. Wishing on lucky pennies and shooting stars and each one of his eyelashes that he isn’t talking to a corpse.
