Silver’s hand moved to the base of Suvi’s neck. “I was just telling him that being able to recognize greatness, and choosing well who to follow, is a skill unto itself.” He brushed his thumb over the skin above her collar to make it clear that he meant Suvi.
Suvi felt a shiver coming on, and did nothing to stop it. She watched color rise in Sworn’s wan cheeks. Oh. Yes, she wanted this.

Two hot, shame-filled tears stole past her lashes and rolled down to break against Sean’s hand. She was weak, and he was broken. He must have hated her, too, for her obstinacy in not letting Marion rest in peace, for making him carry Marion out of that lighthouse on his back, for all the times she nodded him on and all the things she bade him do. He would say this was all her design, but he had been the one to steel her when he asked if they would stand for this, and it was his strength at her back that kept propelling her through the dirty work they did. Even when they held each other because they were such pathetic creatures and they could not wait until they had Marion to love, they must have hated each other’s weakness, but they never admitted it to themselves.
Marion’s footsteps stopped, very near. She could feel her own warmth drawn toward his lack. He said, “Don’t close your eyes this time.”

“You’re safe here,” Marion said. Their chapter house was a refuge, its stained glass window a ward against the dark. “Nothing can reach you. Take a breath in, and let it out.”
He watched Sean’s chest rise and fall. He watched Jean’s face relax with her exhalation, easing out of her constant poise to something more neutral.
“Another breath, as deep as your lungs want.”
They breathed in unison, and it almost seemed that the room breathed with them. Good: they were ready to begin.

Dr. Jean stood with the fingertips of her right hand lifted to the cameo at her throat and a hollow shock in her dark eyes. It took one look for Sean to know that if he wanted to blame her for not being here sooner, for babysitting when she could have stitched the rift closed and avoided this—that would just make two of them.
If she wanted to blame Sean for not holding on tighter, that would just make two of them.
But blame was only useful when you needed to know who deserved your rage. Blame was for directing vengeance for the dead, for making a list and promising yourself you’d get to it, soon, soon. Blame wasn’t worth shit when the person they’d both failed was still alive.

Perhaps it was time he gave her an order. Nathaniel said, “Open your legs, Doctor.”
She hesitated. Her left hand trailed down from Marion’s hair, gloved fingertips stroking along his spine, and Nathaniel recalled how those fingertips felt in the same place on his own back without the glove there to contain her flames.
“Do you know,” said Doctor Basar, “that I technically outranked you?”
