Summary
His nonna's house smelled of perfume and soaps, and Steve's room was right at the top of it. The view from his window made Steve happy in a way he couldn't explain; rolling fields took the place of the grey roads back home, and instead of people in funny business-suits, there were sheep. Steve remembered telling his nonna excitedly about the creatures, and she smiled a genuine smile that made little Steve beam with pride. The next day, she took him out onto the warm sunny fields to see them, and told him all about their wool. She spoke to him in Italian, and Steve latched on to every vowel, every raise of pitch, every foreign drawl that came out of her mouth; he was entranced.
For Steve's birthday that year, as he blew out the candles on the cake his father's assistant had given him, he had wished to have an accent like his nonna's. Maybe then his parents would listen to him like they did to her, he thought as he ate his small slice of cake alone. That would be nice.

He wrote ‘My name is Henry’, but the last word vanished before Kel’s eyes, leaving the sentence unfinished.
“Interesting, isn’t it?” Hero’s eyes shone, but Kel shrugged. “No-one really knows how it works. It even hides nicknames, so I wouldn’t be able to write Hero, either.”
Interesting? More like creepy—and annoying. People wouldn’t act so dumb about their soulmates if they weren’t forced to use pet names (most of which made Kel want to hurl).
In other words; Kel does not need a soulmate. Because love is gross.
