    Wind whipped through the trees, dislodging the last of the fall leaves. Rain fell in torrential sheets, soaking the ground and welling up in huge puddles. The evening chill was harsh, made more fierce by the wind and rain, and an edge of winter had begun to creep into the valley. Despite that, Clementine stood by the cliffs in Cindersap Forest, thoroughly drenched and entirely unmoving. There was another person, a shadowy figure right at the edge of the cliff, facing away from the drop. Lightning flashed, and the momentary light revealed Shane’s face, pale and deadly tired, for a mere moment. The rain fell harder.
