Summary
Cassian Roswell is an aerospace engineering school dropout, unable to move on after the loss of the most important person in their life. They're nonbinary, have encyclopedic knowledge of the night sky, an unnerving attraction to massive robots and machinery that could loosely be described as a 'sexuality', and no idea how to make a friend. Let alone carry out a normal conversation.
Or, in more concise terms; an typical resident of Jet City.
Cassian Roswell is also, through a series of accidents, coincidences, and a near-death experience, the human component of BION Model L16 "Satellite Galaxy" - technology that sits at the center of a new war waged between world-famous cyberneticist Thomas Light, and a mysterious figure only known as "King". One wishes to usher humanity into an age of harmony between flesh and metal, man and machine; the other wants to rule over them.
Cass is not particularly invested in the nuances of this global game of chess. They just don't want anyone else to suffer the same way they did.
This is, as it happens, exactly what makes them a hero.

They flip your hands around again to look at your nails, and the shitty black nail polish your older brother bought for you ages ago, the drugstore brand that chips within days.
You could never paint your nails right. Maybe someone like Asriel or Noelle could do it, but you can't seem to. You always make a mess and get it all over your fingers when you try, and always get crap stuck in the polish from touching things too eagerly. They don't fail to notice this.
“Your manicure seems to suck bad.” They bluntly, reflexively state, before your shared expression turns to one of guilt as they look into the mirror apologetically. “Sorry, that was really mean. Shouldn’t have said that. I'm guessing you're a beginner?”-
