It's Bruce's birthday. All his loved ones are gathered close. Clark stayed the night last night, even, for the first time. It was—

    Quite some time ago, now.

Bruce has a very rough birthday in this one, where he keeps reliving the morning after he and Clark got together for the first time (in a certain way, you know what I mean). He's caught in a time loop for a very long time and this fic doesn't go into the loops in detail, but manages in a rather short story to give you a good idea of how it goes down and more importantly on the impact it has on Bruce and how he deals with it each day.

But it wasn’t like death was a constant, either. Nothing, from breakfast on, was constant. Sometimes he thought to himself, This is the day I fix it, and everyone lived, and Clark was spared, and Clark fell into bed beside him in the evening and they did nothing, simply held each other, warm and real. Or Clark went home to Metropolis; sometimes they fought, sometimes they didn’t, sometimes (twice) they called each other at 23.00 and had frantic-yet-fulfilling phone sex. No Throvanians, no Banbans, no Ra’s, no Joker, no sudden violent mob. Sometimes the day went badly, but no one died: thirteen loops ago, a detachment of the National Guard had rounded up half the League on trumped-up treason charges that Bruce would have sworn weren’t in play the day before.

It helped, when thinking clearly, to think of them as loops and not days. If they were days, he was aging. If they were days, they might be real.

One of my favorites. Set in a MCU AU where Bucky is living at Avengers Tower some time after the events of The Winter Soldier. Though written by owlet and sharing some things in common with the stories in their Infinite Coffee and Protection Detail series, it's not part of that series. Story wherein the rest of the world learns the Winter Soldier is living in the tower and how Bucky & the other folks deal with that. Bucky POV.

I love it when the kids write to Bucky to cheer him up, but I love it more when old people get involved defending him. Mild/vague spoiler: the story ends with one specific old person paying them a visit and it makes me cry a little every time.

Kind of a warm hug of a story if you love Bucky Barnes.

CW: for some mild ableist language (casual period/canon-typical usage of "stupid" and "dumb" and "crazy" and the like).

"JARVIS, I need the TV on now!" Potts shouts.

Barnes's pulse is elevated, and his hands itch for weapons the minute the doors open and Steve stands squinting into all the camera lights, two blue-coated security guards flanking him and failing to keep still or look intimidating in any way.

But this kind of bullshit? It's Steve's favorite.

The reporters are too busy shouting over one another to be understood. Steve holds up the paper.

"Your Soviet assassin," he says in a voice that probably carries all the way to Jersey, "is James Buchanan Barnes."

The entire mass of reporters goes still.

Barnes wonders whether he could fit under Potts's desk.

“Sorry,” Clark muttered, casting him a lopsided smile. “I just realised you’re just like the moon.”

Short fic set post-Justice League that is just a conversation between Bruce and Clark in Clark's room, pretty much. With a side trip to the Kent kitchen to talk to Martha. Pre-slash, Clark POV. Love this glimpse of them and bit of conversation. Clark's perspective on Bruce, Bruce learning Clark a bit via his room.

There was something idiosyncratic about watching Bruce Wayne stand in the midst of his childhood bedroom, aligning tiny planetary figurines on a shelf.

Perhaps the sensation was bolstered by the knowledge that it wasn't just Bruce Wayne there; but Batman.

    Billionaire, playboy, ruthless vigilante.

Stood in the midst of a creaky old farmhouse that he now technically owned, rolling a ping-pong ball sized Jupiter between his fingers.

    Bookmarker's Notes

Beautiful emotional fic wherein Batman has a rough case, Superman shows up, and then in the aftermath Clark calls his mom to talk to her and to have her talk to Bruce. During the course of the fic we're told more about all of their relationships each other, as they remember past events while dealing with a current crisis on that phone call. Bruce, Martha, and Clark POVs. Good character study. Love this take on all of them.

“Bruce,” she quavers, clutching the receiver to her ear with a white-knuckled grip, powerless to do anything but talk. “Bruce, honey, you need to breathe. I want you to take a deep breath for me now. Let me hear you, baby. Let me hear that deep breath.”

If there’s one thing she knows that both of her boys have in common, it’s that they would move heaven and earth and everything in-between if only she ever asked them to try. At her urging, she can hear Bruce audibly struggling to obey, the shallow gasps accelerating in a burst of effort before he finally manages to draw in the huge, shuddering gulp of a drowning man who’s just broken to the surface, still neck-deep in the water but no longer trapped under its weight. His subsequent shaky exhale mirrors Martha’s own, her head nodding in encouragement even if he’s not there to see it.

“There we go,” she hums, low and soothing. “You don’t have to talk, all right? Just breathe with me.”

They take their next breath together, in and out. Then, in the space before she can speak again, Bruce makes his confession, his voice hollow with despair.

    “I couldn’t save her.”

Martha squeezes her eyes shut, her hand once again pressed flat over her breastbone to quell the sudden, sharp ache in her chest. It’s exactly what she feared as soon as she realized they were calling her from the cave, when she knew that whatever happened must be connected to the noble cause they’ve both dedicated their lives to serving. After those first two years spent consoling Clark after every tragedy that Superman failed to prevent, she was certain that she would never meet anyone so determined to carry the weight of the world on his shoulders, so absolutely convinced that he was responsible for the protection of every single human life on this planet. Then she met Bruce Wayne.

    Bookmarker's Notes

Set after Batman vs. Superman. Clark's alive, everything's different. Diana seeks him out and suggests he seek out Bruce. There's a case in Gotham involving fear toxin. Alternates Bruce & Clark POVs as they circle each other. It's a quiet fic about Clark (and Bruce) dealing with grief and change and each other. Good appearances too by Martha Kent, Diana, Alfred, and Lois.

    “Clark,” Bruce says, quietly. “Don’t.”

Clark looks across at him, feels his stomach drop. Bruce’s eyes are hard and cruel. “Gotham is my responsibility,” Bruce says. “Go save a cat out of a tree, write a pseudonymous puff piece about corporate espionage. Next time there’s a nuke needs punching into dust I’ll have you on speed dial.”

It’d be well within his rights, Clark thinks, to trash Bruce Wayne’s pristine, classy kitchen. The fork in his clenched fist is bent in half. “Are you done?”

Bruce inclines his head. “If you’ll excuse me.”

He shouldn’t have come, Clark thinks, watching Bruce retreat from the kitchen, his temper – save for the unfortunate fork – held just about in check. The tangle of all this, the mess at the heart of it, is neither his responsibility nor his fault. But stupidly, predictably, stubbornly, Clark has fallen foul of his worst weakness: hope.

He’d asked before, down in that windowless, sharp-aired room, dominated inescapably by its hanging coffin, whether Alfred worried that he and Diana might leave Bruce weak. “Quite the opposite,” Alfred had replied. “I think you – Ms Prince – I think the pair of you can bring him back.”
