This is the part that always knocks Sniper's off course—the unfinished sentence begging him to pitch in, to complete the thought.
The questions that Sniper chews over, the answers he edits out of his mouth—they're all there, crouched and waiting on the surface this time: Did you draw it for me or did you draw it thinking of me? How do I fit in the picture? Unsaid, but Scout catches them anyway. His smile is just crooked enough, his eyes patient enough, to make Sniper wonder if it's possible to hide anything from him.
In which Sniper looks from afar until he doesn't have to.

"And you’re going?" The tiny piece of ground he stands on shifts; he feels himself teetering dangerously close to some unseen edge, as if his own voice might tip him over.
"Maybe."
Maybe. Maybe. It leaves a space where certainty should be, a stuttering gap that Logan can’t bridge. Beneath his ribs, something clenches and tightens, wringing breath and thought into a knot.
A part of him fixates on that gap, probing its edges like a tongue to a sore tooth, while another part of him echoes distantly, incredulously: "Why?"
He chokes it back, but it pulses insistently, a heartbeat pounding behind too-thin walls. From across the room, through the haze of crumpled time and stretched silences, Patton’s voice floats over.
"This is big for me, Logan."
Logan doesn't take distance well.

Virgil meant it rhetorically, but Roman jumps in with plans to smoke fish in a Mayan pit oven next time. Buoyant and careless, floating past the question Virgil really asked without noticing—or maybe just not caring. He talks about the river, the stars, the unbearable freedom he’s finally found, all in broad strokes like a watercolor he knows will run or fade.
Everything Virgil can’t be on a postcard that doesn’t even have his name on it. And still, he holds on—loosely, because tight knots are what pulled them apart in the first place.
Or, they don’t always mean what they say, but sometimes they do, and that’s when it hurts worst of all.
