Summary
Eddie tilts his head. “Why are you being so weird, Buck?”
It’s funny to Buck that Eddie has to ask; one finds out his ridiculously hot best friend is now also sleeping with men, one begins thinking about sleeping with said ridiculously hot best friend. It just makes sense, right? So it almost offends him, a little bit, that Eddie is the picture of cool right now. Has seeing Buck in such a deliberately sexual context not altered Eddie’s brain chemistry, too? Does Buck need to update his Grindr profile?
or,
Buck catches Eddie on Grindr and now he can't stop thinking about it.

Summary
"I—I keep thinking…" He couldn't finish.
"Yeah," Eddie said. He rubbed at his jaw, sighed, shifted close enough to settle a hand on Buck's arm. "Hey, come on. We should probably get some sleep."
And that sounded like the worst thing—the worst thing. Worse than those first nights alone in this house, worse than those nights at Abby's place after she left, worse than the couch at the loft after the ladder truck explosion, with his shattered leg throbbing and the whole vast empty future yawning out ahead of him.

Summary
Buck had almost never been more honest when he’d responded, “I think I’d kill someone to see you in something lacy.”
At the time, Eddie had laughed it off, and Buck was certain that would be the end of it. They’d keep working on ways for Eddie to feel more comfortable asking for what he wants. Evidently, Eddie had been thinking about something entirely different because holy shit.
Eddie looks–
He’s wearing—
Buck scrambles onto his stomach, reaching out and stopping just short of feeling lace under his fingertips. It’s a jockstrap, made of deep purple lace with a botanical pattern, a white band stretched over his hips.
“I didn’t even kill anyone.” Buck whispers, awed.
Eddie snorts. “Prouda you, bud.” He snarks, but he’s blushing bright red anyway. His voice is far softer when he asks, “do you… like it?”
OR
Buck has no shortage of fantasies about Eddie. Eddie doesn't mind indulging him.

Summary
“I-I didn’t say time loop,” Buck says. “How’d you know it was a time loop?”
Eddie laughs, and it’s electric, not the soft, gentle thing that lights up Buck’s insides, but something charged like a trip wire. “You said dreaming about living the same day, that’s a time loop.”
“No,” Buck says. “I said dreaming something that happens the next day.”
Eddie groans. “It doesn’t matter. I just knew where you were gonna go with it, and-and yeah, I’ve had weird dreams before. You probably just need a little more sleep – didn’t you say you’d been having trouble?”
This is not what he needed. Usually, Eddie would ask a few calming, leading questions, and get him somewhere more stable, but this… it’s like Eddie’s ten steps ahead of him and Buck doesn’t know how to catch up.
OR
Buck and Eddie get stuck in a time loop eight hundred miles apart.

Stares.

Summary
"Sorry," Buck says, with an exaggerated wince. "Sorry, sorry, that's not—that's not a proposal, for the record, don't freak out. I was just wondering."
Something about the way he says it makes Eddie wonder if maybe it would be a proposal, if he'd reacted differently just now. He dismisses the thought immediately. Buck is a grand romantic gestures kind of guy. He wouldn't ask Eddie to marry him out of the blue, on the couch, halfway through a Lakers game. Eddie is sure of it.
Mostly sure of it.

“I’m gonna text you,” Buck says. There’s a bright, forceful cheer in his voice. It hangs in the air between them. “As soon as I’m landed, I’m going to be planning the next trip. Bobby’s always on my ass about not using my PTO. Now that I know you’re not living in an active hazard waste zone, you’re not going to be able to get rid of—”
Eddie kisses him.

Summary
The thing is: Eddie hasn’t had to think about dating at all - not until his mother called to remind him how thirty-something-and-single he is right before Christmas. It hasn’t crossed his mind much, it hasn’t interested him whatsoever. He’s having too much fun hanging out with Buck all the time.
So no, he hasn’t considered dating men. Not really. He gets the idea and then he runs from it. Somehow, he always manages to run straight into Buck. The irony is not lost on him.

Summary
Buck kissed him for — for some reason. Eddie’s not really sure why. He can’t parse the hows and the whys of that right now when he needs to snap Buck out of a spiral.
“Buck, you need to calm down,” Eddie says. Buck just makes a miserable noise. “Can you look at me for a sec?”
“No can do,” Buck says, voice tight. “I’m too busy trying to figure out how to fake my own death.” Despite himself, Eddie snorts and Buck whirls around, affronted. “Eddie, I’m being so serious right now. This is one of the top most embarrassing moments of my life.”
Or: Buck kisses Eddie over a kettle. Eddie’s straight.

Summary
There's another silence, a brief one. Eddie's stomach swoops like he's in freefall. Then Buck says, even lower, "What would you do? If you were here?"
Eddie breathes in, sharp. He feels like he's standing on the edge of a cliff, the sheer drop as inviting as it is terrifying. L'appel du vide, the call of the void. There have been studies on it; he's pretty sure Buck is the one who told him that. The urge, in a high place, to jump.

Summary
Buck tries. He does; it’s not working. There’s a mental block that’s stronger than the near-painful pressure on his bladder. It’s a little humiliating, just standing there waiting for nothing to happen. “I can’t,” Buck admits, voice small, and he’s about to turn around himself when the grip Eddie has on his waist tightens.
“You can.” Again with that making-it-happen voice. One of Eddie’s hands begins a soothing motion, edging from his side to Buck’s stomach.

Summary
“That truck meant a lot to me,” Eddie says.
“I know. I’m sorry. I just.” It’s bursting out of him, the laughter. “You really miss it.”
“Yeah?” Eddie says, and he goes all misty-eyed again and Buck. Buck is in hysterics. “Hey, fuck you, dude.”
“Be honest,” Buck says. “Be completely honest. Have you ever thought about it while you were jerking off.”
As long as you're both jerking off about a truck, there's no way it isn't platonic.

Summary
“Is that what you’ve been up to while I've been gone?”
There’s no judgement, just curiosity in his voice. But for some reason Buck still finds himself saying: “No. Just a movie I was watching. Had me thinking about Buck 1.0.”
He doesn't know why he lied. But he doesn’t know how to say, ‘I exchanged blowjobs with a stranger forty-five minutes ago’, and have it not matter. Have it not change the tone of the conversation. He doesn’t want to put it into words that that’s what he did and then right after he called Eddie. It feels like something he shouldn’t admit to.

“My best friend almost died.” Eddie says, every word feeling heavy in his mouth. “And then he confessed his love for me.”
“Is that a bad thing?”
Eddie laughs, something hysterical bubbling up in him. ”It’s—I don’t even know.”
“So, what's the problem? Oh no,” he winces, “Is he ugly?”
“I'm straight.”
That gets him a look. “Honey, you know you’re in a gay bar right?"

Summary
Buck had been surprised, at first, that he didn’t act any differently around Eddie after that. It turns out he’d been acting in love with Eddie since day one, and he couldn’t be much more obvious if he tried. The problem was that he could see it now, he was watching himself in slow motion, painfully aware of his lovelorn behavior but unable to stop. It was unnerving. But he was getting used to it.
But Eddie slinging an arm around his shoulder and saying, easy as anything, Yep. Eddie Diaz, nice to meet you. had decidedly not been part of Buck’s extensive crush-on-Eddie exposure therapy.
Or: Eddie comes home with Buck for Christmas and pretends to be his boyfriend.

Summary
Once Eddie turns the corner, and Buck can no longer convince himself that he can still see the back of the U-Haul bumping its way to Texas over the uneven pavement, Buck goes inside to clean up breakfast. It had been a perk of being the renter, one of many, that the house didn’t need to be fully packed up and cleaned, that they could linger over one last breakfast together at the kitchen table without rushing to get it cleared away.
Now Buck contends with the dishes, rinsing the toast crumbs and barely-there slime of egg and cheese off the plates as he fills the sink. He takes the final swig of his water before adding his glass to the soapy sink as well, then picks up Eddie’s. There’s a faint, hazy spot on the rim, a shimmer of bacon grease in the shape of Eddie’s bottom lip. Buck sets the glass aside.
Or: Eddie leaves for El Paso. Buck keeps a piece of him in LA.

“And then he basically accused me of being in love with you, which was so ridiculous that I kicked him out,” Buck finally says, out of breath and flushed with terror. “Which was the right move, because that was crazy, right? Doesn’t that sound crazy?”
“What? Why?” Eddie asks over speakerphone, sounding not even a little horrified by the suggestion and in fact, more distracted than anything. “Wait, sorry, give me one second, I need to watch the recipe video.

Summary
“Eddie,” Buck breathes, laughing humorlessly, his voice wet and thick. “If we sat here and-- and went through the list of things I want…” his hands gesture aimlessly. “We’d-- be here all night.”
Eddie nods, catching Buck’s eyes again. “Maybe-- we start with mine, then.”
The space between them feels charged with static, like the second before the thunder finally rumbles.
-----
Eddie’s finally choosing to be better-- finally choosing joy. He just needs a push or two in the right direction, first.
