“Morning sweetheart,” Derek says, pausing briefly to ruffle his hand gently through Spencer’s hair. The genius nuzzles into the touch but doesn’t reply. It’s too early for conversation, Morgan knows. Pretty boy may get up earlier than he does, but it takes the younger a lot longer to really wake up.

Dr. Spencer Reid, Hotch called him.
Apparent genius and ex-CIA. Three PhDs to his title and over 6 years of prior agency experience. 22 years old, assigned straight to the most prestigious unit in the FBI.
According to Gideon: “The most brilliant mind I’ve had the chance to witness.”
His superior had been otherwise tight-lipped about him. They get more from Hotch, but barely.
“He’ll be an asset to the team,” Hotch says. “Strauss backs Gideon’s judgment.”
The new agent’s due to start in 2 weeks to the day. There’s something loaded in his superior’s words...not disapproval, per se.
(It does nothing to dispel Morgan’s concern).

“You know,” Morgan breaks the silence, tone teasing. “Behind those nerdy glasses, ugly grandpa cardigans, and ill-fitting slacks...my pretty boy could be a real heartbreaker.”
If Reid’s laugh holds a hysterical tinge, Derek doesn’t mention it. Spencer's craving another smoke (or something stronger and not allowed) but it isn’t worth the disappointed eyes the older agent will give.
“The clothing’s just a front,” Reid admits, instead. His voice sounds overly light; he’s joking too, except deadly serious. “I can’t wear things which look good and fit—people might actually notice me.”

Summary
Spencer Reid, with his four PhDs, is a little late in joining the BAU, but he integrates well, even if he is oddly secretive about his personal life. All the team knows about him is that he has a son he dotes on, and every now and then Spencer walks into work like he’s on cloud nine, though he never introduces the mystery girlfriend/boyfriend making him smile like that to anyone.
Until the team is sent on a case where they quickly learn that the string of murders they’re investigating is not what it seems. And that’s when a tape of their lead suspect being tortured arrives at the BAU. It turns out that Alan Hartsfield is actually an undercover FBI agent who’s been working to infiltrate the Via Maris trafficking ring--until the BAU showed up and started casting doubt on his supposed crimes. And that his name is really Aaron Hotchner, and he’s Spencer’s husband.
