War was as messy as Merlin remembered it. For all that had happened to him, this was what he was good at, what he was used to. And how comforting that no men of his were here to get harmed, no need to worry about Gwaine or Mordred or Freya.
Now it was just Arthur. But one man was easy to protect, even though the enemy was a thousand men stronger than anticipated.
After all, with Merlin at their side, the war was won. Men were lost and badly injured, Merlin himself was quite powerless at the end of it - but it was a spectacle.
At last their enemies surrendered, when King Merlin of Essetir, Emrys the Warlock and the last Dragonlord made use of his power, dragons roaring through the sky and burning the front lines in a matter of seconds.
Uther couldn’t look him in the eyes for the better part of the aftermath, Arthur on the other hand barely left his side, like a worried mother hen, while Merlin healed his magic wounds and exhausted soul. Gwaine and Mordred weren‘t much better and it was all a bit over the top, but Merlin wouldn‘t dare complain, not when he had such wonderful family caring about him like this.
Everything healed just fine in the end and Uther held his promise.
A year later magic was back in Camelot.
The people and the land were glowing with pride and happiness, even Uther couldn’t resist smiling at the magical fireworks.
Two years later a new castle finished building right by Lake Avalon. And on the shore a little ceremony was held, a wedding under friends, a unification of two great kingdoms and two men bound by destiny and love.
