Chapter Text
The small office was quiet in the early morning with only the sound of the computer keys tapping. Maddie looked up when her boss walked in, pushing the box on the corner of her desk towards him in greeting without stopping her work.
“Your mother knows I love her, right?” he asked, lifting a coffee cream doughnut out of the box.
Maddie smiled up at him, “She knows and will continue feeding you cakes as long as I have a job.”
Dr Daniel Jackson grinned down at his assistant, “Well since I can’t get anything done without you, neither of us has to worry.”
“Messages are on your desk,” Maddie told him, “Along with three mission reports from Stargate Command for you to go through. Joe will be here at about eleven to discuss the next show as well as the lecture tour.”
Daniel sighed, “I’m just hoping they’ll finally agree to my request.”
Maddie tilted her head sympathetically, “You’re the public face of the Stargate project, they are never going to let you go through. You know that.”
Daniel sighed again, “Remind me never to come to you for a pep talk.”
“You don’t pay me to be optimistic,” she reminded him with a smile.
Daniel rolled his eyes at her while he snagged another of the pastries from the box before he headed into his office.
Placing the two cakes onto his desk Daniel dropped into his chair trying to remember what it was like to be an actual archaeologist and not a glorified lecturer. It had been a long time since he’d been able to participate in a dig and just discover something for himself.
Unfortunately ever since he’d stumbled into being the poster boy/PR rep for the Stargate programme, he spent most of his time reading about other people’s findings and presenting them to the public. What really annoyed Daniel was the fact all his theories, the ‘crazy’ theories he’d been laughed out of academia for, were shown to be true a few years after the lecture that destroyed his career.
By a translation he did.
It had been pure luck he’d run into Antonia Cain, who lived across the hall from him, just after his lecture. She was working on a documentary series on Ancient Egypt and needed someone to look over the information so that it was accurate. Daniel had accepted her offer, since it gave him a paycheque for an afternoon out of the rain reading and making notes.
Antonia then asked him to present the information to her bosses as a stand in for the presenter she was still trying to find. At the beginning Daniel gave a high level summary, he quickly saw their eyes glaze over and stopped. The next thing he said became his catchphrase, which he wished ever since that he’d put more thought into, ‘So, what does that mean?’
Somehow he ended up with the job of presenter of the series of documentaries which became extremely popular then, when the Stargate was opened and revealed to the public, Daniel was asked to present the findings of the off-world explorations to the world. This was partly due to the fact the Stargate proved his theories and how popular his documentaries were.
With a sigh, Daniel picked up the first file on his desk and started to read.
Maddie looked up from her work a few hours later to see Joe Maxwell, the show’s executive producer, wander into the office. He made a beeline for the box of cakes on her desk, frowning when Maddie moved them away from him.
“Just answer me one thing,” she said with a slight smile, “Will you leave him in a good mood or bad mood?”
Joe chuckled, “A very good mood.”
Maddie moved the box back, “Then you can have the coconut cream finger I made sure I brought for you.”
“Do me a favour,” he asked, helping himself to the pastry, “Call Margot and get her to order three boxes of your mother’s best cakes for my meeting tomorrow morning.”
Maddie smiled, “No problem.”
He grinned at her before he went over the Daniel’s office and headed straight inside.
Maddie quickly called Joe’s assistant, chatting with her for a few moments. Returning to work she jumped when Daniel suddenly yelled her name. With practised ease she grabbed her pad and pen before heading into his office.
“Can you say that again?” Maddie asked stunned.
Daniel’s grin somehow got wider, “They’re letting me go through, Maddie. I’m getting to go through the Stargate.”
Maddie turned to Joe, “Are you serious? This isn’t a joke? Because April was months ago.”
Joe shook his head, “We’ve been thinking about this for a while. There’s been some rumbling that the show is not as big a draw as it was. So when Daniel suggested going through, again,” he rolled his eyes at the other man, “It was decided it would be a great idea and we could build an entire event around it.”
“We’re going to keep it quiet,” Daniel took over, “If anyone asks we’re doing a special within the SGC itself spending time with the SG teams, speaking to the scientists and getting to know the staff.”
“Except you’ll actually be on another planet,” Maddie noted, still trying to get her head around this concept.
“For a week of it anyway,” Daniel nodded, his grin still as wide as it had been, “We’ll need you to make sure no one knows that outside the base.”
“I’ll lie through my teeth as always,” Maddie chuckled, “When do we go?”
“Daddy, hurry up,” Charlie O’Neill called from the couch, “It’s starting.”
Jack rolled his eyes as he picked up the hot chocolate he’d made for them, it was so ironic that he went through the Stargate but Charlie was in awe of the host of the show who told him all about it.
Taking a seat beside his son Jack listened to the narrative at the beginning of the show. He liked this bit; it was the high-level explanation of the shows topic before Jackson broke everything down and explained fully.
Jackson was good at this but Jack wasn’t quite sure if it was a good idea to take the guy off world with them. Unfortunately he had absolutely no choice as the top brass had ordered it so Jack now had to babysit a TV presenter for a week on another planet.
He chuckled softly as he listened to Charlie ohh and ahh at the things he was being shown. When the show finished Charlie turned to him.
“Do you know Dr Jackson?” Charlie asked.
Jack chuckled and shook his head, “I’ve never met him but I’ll let you into a little secret. He’s coming to the base soon to visit.”
“Wow,” Charlie’s eyes widened, “Can I meet him?”
“We’ll see,” Jack pulled him off the couch and over his shoulder, “Time for bed.”
The next morning Jack sat in his office reading the file on Daniel Jackson and the plan they’d been given for taking him off-world. He had argued against it but lost so suggested Abydos as the destination for the one, and only, off-world trip for Dr Daniel Jackson and his TV show.
“Morning, sir,” Carter smiled as she stepped into his office, “Ready for our guest?”
Jack frowned at her, “No. What about you?”
She shrugged, “I’m just hoping he doesn’t disrupt this place too much.”
Jack sighed, “Nice to know I’m not the only one dreading this.”
“When is he due to arrive?” Carter asked.
“Couple of hours,” Jack replied, “I’m meeting him and his ‘team’ to go over the plan.”
Carter chuckled, “Well I’m due to help in lab 3. Have fun.”
“Traitor,” Jack called after her as she disappeared from the room leaving him to stare at the file again.
Maddie checked her messages while they waited for the representative from the SGC to meet them, seriously thinking about knocking her boss unconscious. He was high as a kite and had been since he’d picked her up. Looking up she saw someone arrive finally to escort them inside, smiling as she recognised him.
“Paul,” Daniel greeted the other man with the same grin he’d been wearing all day.
Major Paul Davis the liaison to the show shook the other man’s hand quickly before he turned to Maddie and gave her a quick nod hello.
“Welcome to the SGC,” Paul said, “Where are the rest of your team?”
Daniel shrugged, “It’s just us.”
“What?”
“We were told that when we go through then the camera would be operated by a member of the SGC,” Daniel explained.
“But you’re still here for a few weeks before that?” Paul reminded him.
Daniel shrugged, “For the interviews with the staff we’ll use a camera on the tripod and anything else Maddie can do. We want to be as unobtrusive as possible.”
Paul looked as though he was about to ask something but obviously decided against it. He took one of the bags and motioned them to follow him.
After signing in and receiving a visitor’s pass they headed deep down into the mountain using two elevators, through a mile of corridors and into a large conference room.
Daniel was trying hard to remain calm as they finally entered the SGC. He had about two weeks until he was allowed to step through onto another planet. A planet that was like the home he’d spent the first eight years of his life.
“Dr Jackson,” Paul’s voice interrupted his musing as a bald man with sharp blue eyes wearing a uniform the same as Paul’s appeared, “This is General George Hammond.”
Daniel offered the older man his hand, “It’s a pleasure to finally meet you in person, General.”
“You too, Dr,” Hammond replied, “My granddaughters are both big fans of your show.”
Daniel gave a slight smile, “I hope they’re learning from it. This is my assistant, Madeline Denver.”
Hammond turned to the young woman standing quietly to his side, “Miss Denver, welcome to the SGC. Please take a seat so we can discuss the schedule for the next few weeks.”
Daniel nodded in agreement as he and Maddie both took their seats. He listened intently to the information on what they were allowed to film and where they were allowed to go, asking a few questions. As always Maddie sat at his side making notes quietly. If there was something they’d missed she would pick that up but until that moment she remained silent.
“General,” Daniel spoke up once the other man finished talking, “As the cover story we’re using is that I am covering the SGC for the next three weeks therefore when I do…” he paused trying not to sound too excited, “Go through the Stargate, Maddie needs to maintain that cover.”
Hammond nodded, “Miss Denver is more than welcome, and I will personally ensure she is comfortable within the base.”
“Have I missed anything?” Daniel asked when Hammond left them alone for a few minutes.
Maddie shook her head, “You are amazingly focussed considering the fact you’ve probably not slept in a week with excitement.”
“You remember I’m your boss, right?” Daniel demanded trying not to sound amused.
Before she could retort Hammond returned this time with another man and Maddie returned to her laptop.
“Dr Jackson, Miss Denver,” Hammond said, “This is Colonel Jack O’Neill, the leader of SG1.”
Daniel stood and offered his hand, “It’s nice to finally meet you, Colonel.”
“You too, Doc,” O’Neill shook his hand before turning to Maddie, “And it’s nice to finally put a face to the voice, Miss Denver.”
Maddie smiled back, “And you, Colonel.”
O’Neill took his seat at Hammond’s side sitting directly across from Daniel and leaned back.
“Colonel O’Neill will be accompanying you to Abydos, Dr Jackson,” Hammond explained, “When you are there you will need to follow his orders to the letter. That is the agreement made with Mr Maxwell.”
Daniel nodded, “Of course, I completely agree with that.”
He glanced at Maddie relieved that she didn’t say anything or make any sound at the thought of him following orders.
“Your guide on Abydos,” O’Neill took over, “Is the daughter of the Chief Elder. Sha’re spent several months on Earth recuperating after an accident so she’s pretty fluent in English. She also knows everything you’ll be interested in.”
“That sounds great,” Daniel nodded, “I’m looking forward to meeting her.”
“We still have to get through the next two week first,” Hammond said, “I’ve looked over the list of people you want to talk to and we’ve drawn up a schedule. Colonel O’Neill has this for you.”
“Thank you for this,” Daniel said sincerely, “I promise we will keep out of the way as much as possible.”
Daniel looked around the small office he and Maddie had been given to use while they were here. The schedule O’Neill had given him meant he would get time to speak with everyone he wanted to as well as spend some time training for going through the Stargate. They’d also been given rooms to use, although Daniel tried to insist Maddie book into a hotel, so she saw the outside once in a while. His assistant simply shrugged and pointed out she’d be fine in the base especially as she had to look after him and keep him focussed.
“Okay,” she looked up from the small section of the room she had taken over as her own, “I am going to go get some coffee from the commissary, assuming I can find my way there and back. Do you want anything?”
“Coffee,” he smiled, “We’ll go over the schedule for the next few days once you’re back.”
“Sure,” she smiled back before disappearing.
Daniel leaned back and grinned because he was finally here, he was getting to go through the Stargate. Fine, it was only one trip, but it was happening.
“Are you happy with everything?” Maddie asked once they finished several hours later.
Daniel nodded, “That’s great. Colonel O’Neill has arranged for the first interview tomorrow morning, are you sure you’re okay to work the camera?”
“I’ve done it plenty of times before,” she reminded him.
A fond smile touched Daniel’s lips, “Go and get some rest. I’ll see you in the morning.”
Maddie nodded and disappeared leaving him alone once more in the small office. He looked at the information he’d been given regarding his trip about a dozen times already today but decided to go over it just once more before heading to the gym for an hour. In all honesty he was a little taken by the picture of his guide for Abydos. Daniel had studied her file several times and each time he’d spent ages just staring at the beautiful woman in the picture. Thankfully Maddie hadn’t caught him doing it. With a sigh he shut down the computer and headed to the gym for a while to work off some of his nervous energy.

Jack stood just outside the door to the office watching Jackson while he interviewed Robert Rothman, the head of the archaeology department. Maddie was at the camera watching the two men as they spoke. The problem with this interview was the two men were old friends so every so often they started talking off on a tangent.
“Daniel,” Maddie interrupted each time, “Stay on topic.”
With a nod Daniel moved the conversation back for another ten minutes or so before the cycle began again. Finally Maddie called an end to the discussion and she turned off the camera. The young woman sighed as the two men ignored her and started talking properly.
“Is that the norm?” Jack asked coming over to her.
Maddie shrugged, “Daniel’s a genius. He hears something that interests him and heads off in that direction. I’ve learned to keep him focussed.”
“Well, I wanted to see how things were going,” Jack told her.
Maddie smiled as she started disassembling the camera equipment, “The past week has gone well. The interviews we’ve done have been really interesting and once they’re edited properly they’ll be great.”
“Edited?” Jack asked worriedly.
Maddie chuckled, “To make sure we stay on topic and you don’t have to listen to Daniel go wandering away from what he’s meant to be talking about. Trust me I’ve spent a good amount of time going through recordings. General Hammond will see the full show before it airs.”
“I was hoping to talk to the good doctor,” Jack told her changing the topic.
Maddie glanced at Daniel who was still talking oblivious to the fact Jack was even there, “Good luck with that.”
“Then maybe you can help,” Jack told her before sighing, “My kid loves the show and thinks Jackson is amazing,”
“But you go through the Stargate,” she frowned confused.
Jack waved away her comment, “I was hoping to be labelled father of the year by arranging for Jackson to talk at his school or something.”
“He would love that,” Maddie told him with a smile, “One of the things Daniel adores is sharing knowledge, especially to kids who want to learn. Give me the details and I’ll arrange it.”
“Thanks.”
The next few days went well and Daniel was surprised to find a school visit on his agenda.
“Maddie?”
“Yeah?” she asked without looking up from her laptop.
“Why am I going to a school this afternoon?” he asked, “This wasn’t on our schedule a few days ago.”
Maddie glanced up at him, “You should look at it more often.”
Daniel frowned at her.
“Colonel O’Neill asked that you speak at his son’s school,” Maddie explained, “I thought since it was a free afternoon it would be a good thing. Good for the show and it gets you points with the guy in charge of your safety when you go through.”
Daniel rolled his eyes at her, “I haven’t got anything prepared.”
“Here,” she handed him several pieces of paper, “It’s your standard talk and they’re kids. They’ll ask the standard questions plus you will have the leader of SG1 with you.”
Daniel grimaced, “I would prefer you ask me first.”
Maddie rolled her eyes, “If I waited to ask you everything when you’re talking with some of your peers, we’d get nothing done.”
Jack watched Daniel as he stood on the stage in front of the kids who were all so excited to have him there.
“Thanks everyone,” Daniel grinned holding up his hands for silence, “It’s a pleasure to be here and talk to you about the Stargate. It is even more amazing for me because I am here with a very special guest,” he paused and shrugged, “Well special for me because you guys probably know him since he is the father of one of the students here. Colonel Jack O’Neill of SG1 is here with me.”
A little surprised Jack paused for a moment before giving a quick wave when everyone turned to him.
“Okay, let’s start at the beginning,” Daniel said as the lights dimmed and he started the presentation.
Jack glanced over to Maddie sitting at his side, “He’s really good at this.”
“He loves his subject,” Maddie said with a fond smile, “And loves sharing knowledge with people.”
“Colonel,” Daniel’s voice made him turn back to the stage, “Can you join me?”
Feeling Maddie pat his arm Jack made his way up to join the man holding the attention of over a hundred kids. Daniel smiled at him and handed him a blank square of white card before turning back to the audience.
“Charlie, since your dad is the one who set this up why don’t you join him and can I have six other volunteers?” Daniel asked the Principal teacher.
Jack watched as Daniel lined up the six kids handing them each a card while Charlie stood with him taking the blank card when Daniel motioned him to pass it to his son.
“Okay,” Daniel turned back to the audience, “We have six symbols here. Can anyone tell me what they’re for?”
“A Stargate address,” the girl Daniel pointed to answered.
Daniel nodded, “That’s right and does anyone know why there are six symbols?”
Jack grinned when Daniel got the answer he was looking for then went on to explain fully the need for the six symbols as well as the requirement for the seventh. Daniel spoke about the planets through the gate, the transplantation of humans from Earth to other worlds where cultures he’d studied still existed and then he turned to Jack asking questions about travelling through the Stargate. It was informative but also a lot of fun and Jack was surprised to see the younger man who came across as serious and reserved bouncing about the stage enthusiasm pouring out of him.
At the end of the talk when the kids filed out the assembly hall Jack turned to the other man who was getting in the way of Maddie while she was taking down the projector.
“Thanks for that, Doctor Jackson,” Jack told him sincerely, “The kids were enthralled.”
Daniel grinned at him, “And you’re father of the year?”
Jack shrugged, “Means I can get away with not buying the kid the really expensive gifts at Christmas.”
Laughter echoed around the now empty hall before they took their equipment back to Jack’s jeep.
Daniel climbed into the jeep beside O’Neill with Maddie and Charlie in the back seat, he’d told the Colonel they’d get a cab back to the mountain but was told to just get into the car.
“Daddy,” Charlie spoke up, “Can Dr Jackson have dinner with us?”
Daniel was about to say it wasn’t necessary when O’Neill nodded.
“Your mom is waiting for us,” O’Neill grinned at the kid before shrugging at Daniel’s surprised look, “Maddie and I thought it would be a break from the food at the base.”
Daniel looked back at his assistant who rolled her eyes at him, “I have eaten in the commissary so many times the past few days I’ve got marines offering to send doctors to check I’m not ill.”
“My wife Sara has already made dinner,” O’Neill told him, “So I will be insulted if you try to get out of this.”
Daniel chuckled slightly and nodded, “Thank you, Colonel.”
“And you may as well call me Jack.”
Jack’s house was in a nice neighbourhood with a neat front lawn and it looked comfortable from the outside. The moment Jack parked Charlie was climbing out and running into the house yelling for his mother to let her know they had guests. The rest of the group slid out of the jeep and walked a little more leisurely into the house where Jack’s wife, Sara, had dinner waiting for them.
“That was delicious,” Maddie said as she and Sara sat in the lounge leaving the men to clean the dishes, “Thank you for inviting us. I don’t know about Daniel but I really needed a home cooked meal.”
Sara chuckled, “You’re more than welcome. Jack mentioned you’ve both been locked in there for almost a week and a half without venturing out.”
“I unfortunately work for a workaholic,” Maddie shrugged with a smile, “He knows he’s only got so long here so he’s making the most of it.”
Sara leaned back with her tea, “So next week, what are your plans?”
“I’m going to work on what we’ve already filmed,” she explained, “And sort through schedules for the lectures we’ve been asked for. I won’t be bored, I can promise you that.”
“Well, you’re more than welcome to join me for dinner at least one night,” Sara told her, “And I have a spa voucher that needs used if you want to join me?”
Maddie grinned at her, “That would be fantastic, though I do warn you that if I come across any journalists, I will be lying through my teeth to them.”
“Does that happen often?”
“There are a few muck-rakers,” Maddie replied with a grimace, “Those who seem to want to make Daniel out to be something other than the nice guy he is. You remember the time they trotted out his grandfather?”
Sara nodded, “Yes. That was horrible.”
“His only living relative is in an asylum,” Maddie frowned, “That must mean he’s crazy. Daniel and Joe had to hold me back at one point.”
“You’re very protective of your boss?” Sara noted.
“My mom basically adopted him,” Maddie shrugged before laughing, “Which trust me he loves.”At Sara’s confused look Maddie clarified, “My mom owns a specialised cake shop.”
Sara laughed, “He’s lucky to have you.”
“And he knows it.”
Daniel smiled as he studied the stars through the telescope on Jack’s roof, “This is fantastic. Being able to see the stars like this.”
“Yeah,” Jack chuckled, “Charlie and I come up here all the time. He loves the stars.”
“I’m guessing it’s getting to be with his dad he loves,” Daniel said softly, wincing when Jack turned to him, “Sorry, I didn’t think I said that out loud.”
Jack shrugged, “You’re right though and I dread the day he doesn’t want to hang out with me.”
“Send him to me and I’ll let him know what a gift having his dad around is,” Daniel told him, wincing again, “Sorry.”
“Your history is pretty well known,” Jack pulled a soda out from the cooler at his side and offered it to him.
Daniel grimaced as he took the bottle, “Which completely sucks as it sort of defines how everyone sees me. I’m the poor little orphan who grew up with a crazy grandfather who didn’t want him, I was kicked out of academia for theories that have now been proven true and I’m looking for someone to take care of me.”
“Do you know what I say to that?” Jack asked continuing before the other man could reply, “Screw ‘em.”
“What?”
“You don’t have to be what they want,” Jack told him, “You’re a smart guy. Be who you want to be.”
Daniel nodded, “Thanks.”

Daniel checked his gear for the hundredth time as he waited for the time to arrive and he would finally get to step through the Stargate. At his side Maddie was sitting checking the camera equipment and ensuring everything was working.
Forcing himself to focus Daniel rested his hand on his assistant’s shoulder, “Are you sure you’re okay with this?”
Maddie rolled her eyes, “Daniel, you do realise how often I lie to people for you don’t you?”
“This isn’t telling people I’m busy when I’m trying to beat your high score on Tetris,” he reminded her.
“I deal with the press all the time, Daniel,” she smiled at him, “I can handle anyone who is nosing around and I will be fine here on the base. Sara O’Neill has invited me to join her shopping on Saturday, so I’ll be outside for that.”
Hearing the small alarm Maddie had set on his phone Daniel took a deep breath.
“Are you ready to do this?” Maddie picked up her camera.
Daniel nodded.
“Okay...” Daniel took a deep breath waiting for Maddie’s signal before he started, “The one thing I have enjoyed most about being here within Stargate Command, or the SGC, as it is referred to by everyone here, is the people who work under the mountain. From the scientists, to the soldiers, to the support staff everyone believes in what they do here and the hope for the future the Stargate gives us,” Daniel waited as Maddie pulled the shot out revealing what he was wearing, “And today I get to see that hope for myself. SG1 have agreed to let me tag along with them on their next mission through the Stargate. So for the next week I will be on Abydos getting to see all the important places that helped start this amazing project and meeting the people of the world which has a culture similar to that of Ancient Egypt,” he paused and grinned, “I’m hoping there will be at least some footage where I’m able to talk properly because I cannot explain how excited I am.”
Maddie walked with her boss as they headed to the Gateroom where Jack O’Neill, Sam Carter, Morris Taylor and Teal’c stood waiting for them. Daniel nodded for her to continue filming as he moved to join the other three in silence. Taylor had the camera he usually used to record ruins and anything else deemed significant to record the journey through the Gate as well as Daniel’s first steps on Abydos.
They watched the Stargate spin, listening to the technician call out as each Chevron locked. Finally the Stargate burst open, O’Neill took the lead and started up the ramp followed by Taylor. Daniel stepped onto the ramp and glanced at Maddie giving her small wave with a huge grin before he turned towards the open wormhole. Reaching the event horizon Daniel gently touched the surface, smiling at the ripples his fingers made before he closed his eyes and stepped through.
It felt like ice filled every part of his body and he staggered forward when he came out the other side gasping in surprise when his shoulder was caught by the Colonel.
“The first time is always the worst, Doc,” he said before clapping Daniel’s shoulder, “Ready?”
Shaking slightly and hoping that his stomach settled quickly Daniel nodded standing straighter, “You could have warned me.”
O’Neill chuckled, “And miss your reaction?”
With a sigh, Daniel followed the team out of the room stopping in amazement when they reached the exit and he saw the sunlit planet in front of him.
“Oh my God,” he breathed.
After several moments drinking in the scene before him he turned to Taylor and took the camera filming the view. Catching O’Neill checking his watch, Daniel shut it down and handed it to Taylor again.
“Thanks.”
Taylor nodded, “It’s what I’m here for.”
“Come on,” O’Neill spoke up, “Kasuf is waiting for us, if I know him, with a feast all ready and I have been looking forward to that all week.”
Sha’re fixed herself so that she was presentable for their important guest. When she had been on Earth recuperating she had seen his show and enjoyed it immensely. She had found the man very interesting and personable so was looking forward to meeting him to see if he was the same in person. She was especially looking forward to showing him her world and the wonders it held that he talked about on his program.
“My dear one,” Kasuf called entering her home, “Are you ready? Nebeuh has spotted O’Neill and his party heading for the city.”
Sha’re nodded, “Of course I am. Father, we were asked to treat Dr Jackson as an honoured guest. I would not dishonour you by being unprepared for his arrival.”
Kasuf chuckled, “How dare I accuse you of being so.”
Laughing Sha’re hugged her father tightly, “There is no need to worry, Father.”
Taking his daughter’s hand he led her out of the tent as he could hear the sounds of his people greeting their friends from Earth. Sha’re smiled seeing O’Neill and his people. When she was on Earth he had taken her into his home for the several weeks before she was allowed to return to Abydos. She loved him like a brother because that was what he had become for her.
Taking her place at her father’s side to greet their guests Sha’re watched the man she would be showing her world to over the next week as he stared at everything, nodding hello to her enthusiastic friends and family. Finally they reached the home of the Chief Elder where she waited with her father.
O’Neill stepped forward and gave a quick bow to Kasuf as his position deserved.
“Thank you for having us,” O’Neill said offering Kasuf his hand in his tradition.
Kasuf shook his hand before motioning to Sha’re and nodding they were allowed to greet one another. Sha’re laughed as Jack swept her up into a hug.
“How are you?” Jack asked as he planted a kiss on her cheek.
Sha’re hugged him back just as enthusiastically, “Very well, Jack. It’s wonderful to see you once more. How are Sara and Charlie?”
“Good, they send their love,” Jack replied before stepping back and introducing the man at his side, “Kasuf, Sha’re this is Doctor Daniel Jackson.”
Kasuf stepped forward and offered his hand, “Welcome to Abydos, Dr Jackson.”
“It’s an honour to be here, sir,” the younger man said, “And please call me Daniel.”
Kasuf nodded, “Of course, Dan’iel. I would like to introduce you to my dearest daughter, Sha’re.”
The man turned to her and Sha’re was stunned by how blue his eyes were, she quickly caught herself and dipped her head politely to him.
“It’s nice to meet you,” the man said offering his hand to her.
Sha’re smiled at him taking it, “And you. Please follow me and I shall show you where you are staying.”
Daniel listened to the sounds of the people as they laughed and talked all seated around the large fire. The others from Earth were deep in discussion with the people they knew well these days so Daniel had been able to slip away.
He was still stunned to be on another planet with three moons above him but it wasn’t what had him in a reflective mood. He felt in many ways he’d been transported back in time to his childhood. The smell of the fires, the sound of the chatter and the feeling of community was everything he remembered.
“Is something wrong?”
The soft voice startled him and Daniel spun to find his guide standing above him looking concerned.
“No,” he replied with a slight smile, “I’m fine.”
Taking a seat at his side she gave a small grimace, “Then why are you here alone?”
“I’m not exactly a social animal,” Daniel shrugged.
Sha’re gave a slight frown while she translated his reply, “I will leave you to your solitude.”
“It’s okay,” Daniel said as she started to leave, “Please stay. I have some questions if you don’t mind.”
With a smile she settled back at his side, “Of course not, Dr Jackson.”
“Daniel,” he reminded her.
“Dan’iel,” she gave a soft nod.
“Jack told me you spent some time on Earth?”
Sha’re nodded again, “Yes. There was an accident in the mine. I was injured when my husband was killed.”
She saw surprise in his eyes how simply she stated her loss.
“I’m sorry,” he told her.
Sha’re gave a slight nod, “In order to heal I needed to stay several months on Earth, Jack and Sara gave me a place to live for the final few weeks. I watched all of your shows.”
“Were you being tortured?”
She laughed at his wry question, “I enjoyed them. You love the subject you speak about.”
He shrugged, “I do. And getting to come here to see one of the worlds I talk about is just incredible.”
“Well I can promise that I will take you to all the important places,” Sha’re told him, “Also I shall show you a few parts of Abydos that are not important but I think you should see.”
A brilliant smile covered his face and Sha’re couldn’t stop her own smile.
“It’s getting late,” Daniel said motioning to where the villagers were heading to their homes, “I should probably turn in.”
Sha’re nodded, “Goodnight, Dan’iel. I shall see you in the morning.”
Sha’re was surprised to see that their guest was up before she was. She found him sitting with her father eating breakfast deep in discussion.
“Good morning,” he greeted her with a bright smile making her smile back.
“Good morning to you,” Sha’re replied before she moved to her father and kissed his cheek.
“Dan’iel and I were discussing his childhood,” Kasuf told her, “Did you know he lived in a place that is just like Abydos?”
Sha’re gave him a small smile, “That means he should be comfortable with long walks through the sand.”
Kasuf chuckled and clapped the man sitting at his side on the shoulder, “You will need to keep your wits about you when dealing with my daughter, Dan’iel.”
“I’ve worked that out,” Daniel replied, flashing Sha’re another grin.
Kasuf chuckled again before standing and resting his hand on Sha’re’s arm, “My dear one, have you eaten?”
Sha’re nodded, “Yes, Father.”
“Then Dan’iel,” Kasuf turned to the younger man, “I leave you in my daughter’s capable hands.”
Daniel nodded as he stood to join her, he wiped the sand off his clothing before smiling at her, “I’m ready whenever you are.”
Daniel knew he was bouncing as he walked with Sha’re across the sand to the caves that held the story of how the people came to Abydos. Taylor was walking behind them, camera in hand and listening to his music ignoring the chatter.
“Do you mind if we film you?” Daniel asked as they neared the caves.
Sha’re shook her head, “Of course not.”
“That makes things easier when we come to edit the show,” Daniel grinned, “If I don’t have to remove you from the recording.”
She chuckled making Daniel smile some more. He had to admit, as beautiful as her picture was, she was more beautiful in person and he hadn’t been expecting the wicked sense of humour behind the sweet smile.
It didn’t take them long to reach their destination. Sha’re stopped him and found a torch which she lit from the lantern she was carrying before leading him through the small entrance. Daniel gave a soft murmur of amazement, he had seen film clips of the cavern but getting to see it in person was a whole different experience.
“Do you wish to record?” Sha’re asked making him spin, embarrassed that he had basically forgotten anyone else was there.
“Not yet,” he replied, “I want to check the room fully first.”
She nodded and stayed at the entrance waiting with Taylor while Daniel moved around taking in the history on the wall before him. After about half an hour he managed to focus on what he was meant to be doing and motioned Taylor he was ready.
Jack looked up when Daniel and Sha’re appeared talking intently, both were obviously enjoying their conversation.
“So,” he interrupted the moment they reached him, “How was the first day?”
“Incredible,” Daniel grinned enthusiasm pouring from every word, “The cave is just...” he trailed off for a moment before switching into a language Jack thought might be German, maybe Dutch considering his Grandfather.
“Daniel,” Jack held up his hand stopping mid-sentence, “Why don’t you go get dinner.”
“Oh, yeah that’s a good idea,” Daniel turned to the woman at his side, “Do you...are you...”
Sha’re nodded, “Yes, dinner would be nice.”
With a smile to Jack she took Daniel’s arm and led him to the fire. Jack looked over to Taylor with a raised eyebrow.
“He looked round the cave for a good while. Then he started translating the walls with Sha’re giving him the correct translation,” Taylor said with a shrug, “I’m sure it will be fascinating when edited together.”
Jack chuckled, “Go get something to eat.”
Taylor nodded his thanks before heading over to the fire. Jack watched their guest as he talked with his guide, he knew they would get along.
Sha’re served her guest some stew before taking a bowl herself and leading him to a spot to sit. They ate in silence watching the other members of the team from Earth as they interacted with the people of Nagada.
“So,” Daniel said after he finished eating, “That was really incredible today. Seeing the cave in pictures is nothing compared to the real thing.”
“I am glad that it was not a disappointment,” Sha’re smiled, “For tomorrow, do you wish to see the pyramid or the cavern which holds all the addresses for the Chappa-aii?”
Daniel mused for a moment, “I think I’d like to see the Cavern tomorrow.”
“Of course,” she told him.
Before he could say anything else Sha’re’s attention was caught by a man walking past them. He caught the sadness in her eyes before she forced a smile on her face, “Would you excuse me?”
“Sure,” Daniel told her, “Don’t worry about me.”
With a nod she left. Daniel watched her place her bowl on the pile for cleaning before she headed after the man. A small flare of jealousy hit him when Sha’re embraced the man tightly and he dropped his eyes for a moment to focus on the last of his meal. When he looked up again they were both gone.
With a soft sigh Daniel placed his bowl with the others before he headed back to his tent to write his journal entry for the day.
Chapter Text
Maddie and Sara sat in the small cafe enjoying a coffee after their shopping trip. She had to admit it was nice to get out of the mountain for a while and spend some time in the sun.
“It so good to have some real coffee,” Maddie noted, “The stuff in the base is like tar.”
Sara chuckled, “It’s designed to caffeinate the scientists, not to be palatable to normal people. How is your time at the base going?”
“It’s good,” Maddie told her, “I’ve spent a good bit of time working through the interviews, making sure we have everything.”
Sara was about to say something else but stopped a frown creasing her forehead.
“What’s wrong?” Maddie asked concerned.
“There’s a woman at the table just behind you,” Sara explained softly, hiding her mouth, “I think she’s recording our conversation.”
Maddie grimaced before she stood and walked directly over to the woman taking the recorder out of the woman’s hand.
“Hey.”
“You’re recording my conversation, Harper,” Maddie stated coldly, “I’m sure we’ve talked about this before.”
The woman stood, her denims and sweatshirt that was supposed to look relaxed and comfortable but had obviously just been bought, “I’m just here for some coffee.”
“I have the restraining order,” Maddie reminded the other woman, “And I am more than happy to call your boss...again.”
Harper grimaced before turning to Sara, “Mrs O’Neill, it’s a pleasure to meet you.”
Sara silently turned to Maddie waiting.
“Sara, this is Harper Golden,” Maddie chuckled, “Muck raker and Daniel groupie. She’s the one who brought up his grandfather.”
Harper tossed her hair, “It was a good story.”
“It was you getting back at him because he worked out you were a journalist and wouldn’t sleep with you,” Maddie shot back.
Anger covered Harper’s face briefly before she grabbed her recorder back and thrust it at Maddie.
“So, where is Daniel?” Harper demanded, “Through the Stargate?”
Maddie chuckled, “You think they’d let him go through?”
“Then why has no one seen him for almost a week?” Harper continued.
“Because the man is a genius,” Maddie told her with a cold smile, “Which you learned when he spotted you were a journalist after five seconds of talking to you. He is in a place where there are people who speak his language, of course no one has seen him outside the base. I on the other hand see him every day.”
Sara stepped forward and moved Harper’s arm, so the recorder was out of Maddie’s face, “I think that’s enough. We have things to do today.”
With a smug smile at the journalist Maddie followed Sara out of the coffee shop.
“You are good,” Sara chuckled.
Sha’re sat eating her breakfast waiting for Daniel to appear, she assumed he was sleeping in now he was used to where he was. She had truly enjoyed the past few days. Talking with him, explaining the sites the people of Earth had used to travel the galaxy and teaching him how Abydonian had developed from the Ancient Egyptian he knew.
“So, what are doing today?” Daniel asked appearing suddenly.
Sha’re smiled at him sweetly, “Today I am taking you to the Ki’ia Oasis.”
“Why?”
“Because it is something you should see,” Sha’re told him.
Daniel frowned slightly, “I’m here to...” he trailed off when she held up her hand.
“I was asked to show you my world,” Sha’re reminded him, “This is a part of my world that is beautiful, and I wish to share with you.”
Daniel winced before nodding, “Alright.”
She smiled even more at him, “Wonderful. I have packed food for us and if we start now then we shall reach the Oasis for lunch.”
“Do I need to bring anything?” Daniel asked.
Sha’re shook her head, “Just yourself.”
“Daniel,” Jack called from his spot next to the fire making Daniel spin surprised he hadn’t seen him sitting there, “Take your radio.”
“Oh,” Daniel found the radio in the small pack, “Sorry, of course Colonel...Jack.”
Jack rolled his eyes and waved them away. Daniel offered to take the bag Sha’re was carrying, after a moment she gave it to him, and they started out of the city.
It was a three-hour journey but finally they reached their destination and Daniel stared stunned. There was a large expanse of clear water surrounded by trees and grass bordered by rock. He could see several caves in the mountains that were sheltered.
“It’s beautiful,” Daniel breathed staring at the unexpected haven.
At his side Sha’re laughed softly, “I told you that you would like it here.”
Daniel turned to her, “I bow to your wisdom.”
Sha’re’s eyebrows rose in amusement, “I shall remember that, Dan’iel.”
He rolled his eyes at her laughter before motioning her forward, “So, where are we having lunch?”
Taking his arm Sha’re led him up onto the rocks, already warm from the sun where she took out a blanket and placed it on the ground. Daniel sat where she instructed him to, watching while she set out their meal.
“It’s been a long time since I’ve been on a picnic,” Daniel noted as he ate.
“That is quite sad,” Sha’re replied, “Do you not have picnics when you travel for your show?”
Daniel chuckled, “Not like this. We eat in the car or in the corner of a room and usually have to finish fast so we can get back to work. We don’t spend a lot of time enjoying the view,” he glanced over at her, “Or the company.”
Sha’re smiled at the compliment for a moment before asking, “Who is we?”
“What?”
“You said ‘We’ about picnics,” Sha’re noted, “I was wondering who the others who make up ‘We’ are.”
Daniel nodded in understanding, “Maddie,” he told her, “My assistant. We basically spend all our time together when working.”
“You care for her,” Sha’re said softly.
Daniel shrugged giving a small smile, “She’s like a sister. Especially since her mother has sort of adopted me.”
Sha’re frowned slightly in thought.
“I don’t have any family,” Daniel continued softly, “It’s nice that she’s given me some.”
Reaching out Sha’re took his hand in hers for a moment in comfort before she picked up the bag once more and pulled out a final package.
“What is this?” Daniel asked at the small cake she handed him.
Sha’re smiled, “They are called honeycakes. My mother used to make them every morning for breakfast. I make them now on special occasions.”
He heard the sadness in her voice but knew there was nothing he could say so instead smiled at her, “Then I’m honoured,” taking a bite Daniel let out a soft sound of enjoyment, “They’re fantastic.”
“I am glad you are enjoying it,” she told him, “I thought, once you have finished your cake, we could take a walk around the Oasis before we head back to the city.”
Sha’re knew it was a good idea to take Daniel to the oasis. He was so focussed on his work that she wanted to make him relax just for a short time. He was carrying her bag once again while they walked, something he insisted on making her smile at his kindness.
A strange sound coming from Daniel made her turn to him, “What is that?”
Daniel grimaced a bit confused for a moment before his eyes widened in realisation, “The radio,” he rummaged through his pockets and pulled it out, “Colonel...Jack?”
“Where are you?” Jack demanded.
Daniel frowned confused, “We’ve just left the Oasis.”
“Get back there and get to safety,” Jack ordered.
Sha’re took the radio, “What is wrong?”
“There’s a sandstorm heading your way,” Jack told her, “It’s just hit Nagada.”
Sha’re grabbed Daniel’s arm, starting to run pulling him back to the Oasis, “We are heading back.”
The sky was beginning to darken as they neared the caves and Sha’re quickly headed to the safe one. Daniel followed her inside watching as she pulled the leather covering over the entrance before fixing it in place.
“Are we safe?” Daniel asked.
Sha’re nodded, “We are. There is firewood and we have enough supplies to get us through until the storm recedes. You must let Jack and my father know we are safe.”
Heading to the back to the cave Sha’re found the firewood that sat there along with the blankets, she listened to Daniel assure the others that they were and would be fine until the storm was clear. She picked up the firewood and started to build a fire in the pit not concerned that she would be stuck here all night with Daniel. In fact she was looking forward to it.
“Okay, Daniel,” Jack said, “Sha’re knows what she’s doing so listen to her.”
Switching off the radio he turned to where Kasuf was standing waiting to hear his daughter was safe.
“They made it back to safety,” Jack assured him, “Sha’re will keep him right.”
Kasuf nodded, “That is good.”
Jack frowned in thought, “You seem pretty relaxed considering your daughter is currently stuck alone with a man.”
“Do you believe he would hurt my daughter?” Kasuf asked.
Jack shook his head, “Of course not and, forget the fact he knows what I would do to him if he hurt her, Daniel is pretty smitten by her.”
The older man chuckled softly before sighing, “My daughter did not want to marry but for the good of all she had to. Her husband was the best man I could find for her, but she did not love him the way my wife and I loved one another.”
Jack grimaced not sure what to say.
“You offered Sha’re a chance to stay and learn on Earth,” Kasuf reminded him, “Perhaps if there is someone there who she wishes to spend time with then she will agree this time.”
Jack shook his head in amusement, “Trying to get rid of her?”
“Wanting to see her happy,” the older man chuckled, “Something I do not believe she will be here.”
Daniel smiled listening to Sha’re tell him about the last time she was trapped here in a sandstorm. He grimaced slightly hearing the wind outside and Sha’re rested her hand on his arm.
“We are safe in here,” she assured him, “I promise.”
Daniel grimaced slightly, “Sorry, I just don’t like being trapped, as much as I am enjoying the company.”
Sha’re squeezed his arm slightly, “I understand.”
“Okay,” he shook himself, “I need you to talk to me, keep my mind off being stuck in here.”
“What do you want me to talk about?” Sha’re asked amused.
Daniel shrugged, “Anything. Tell me more about yourself.”
“There is not much to tell,” Sha’re said.
He mused for a moment before asking, “Then what about the time you spent on Earth?”
“I loved it,” Sha’re told him, “It was wonderful being in a world without the expectations I had here as the daughter of the Chief Elder.” She took a drink and continued, “Jack and Sara were very kind and took me in while I was unable to return home. Charlie showed me all his favourite things, including your show.”
Daniel winced slightly.
“I enjoyed it,” Sha’re assured him at his embarrassed look, “You have such passion for your subject. I learned a great deal watching it. How did you get started?”
He laughed, “Pure luck. Sometimes I don’t know if it is good or bad.”
Sha’re laughed as well.
“But,” Daniel continued, “I get to learn so much and share that knowledge with people who want to learn. I always thought that the only thing better would be to go through the Stargate and look, here I am.”
Sha’re smiled sweetly, “Here you are experiencing it all.”
The wind outside howled, and Daniel shuddered.
“Are you alright?” she asked softly.
“Just memories,” he told her, at her penetrating look Daniel continued, “I spent the first few years of my life in Egypt, I used to hear storms like this a lot.”
Sha’re reached out and took a hold of his hand, “You can hold my hand if you’re scared.”
“What if I’m not scared?” Daniel asked, his thumb gently stroking the soft skin.
Looking into his eyes, Sha’re smiled again, “That’s fine also.”
“So,” Daniel said with a smile, “Tell me more about your time on Earth.”
Chapter 5
Notes:
Yeah, I have finally written a new chapter for this, although this is the third version of this chapter.
Hope you enjoy and hopefully I'll get the next chapter up quicker.
Chapter Text
Jack sat in the tent listening to the whistle of the wind around him, relieved that the Abydonians were quick in recognising the signs of the storm, so no one was caught in it.
“Taylor,” he called over his radio, “How’re you doing in the pyramid?”
“Fine, sir. We’re hunkered down,” Taylor told him, “I’m teaching the kids to play poker.”
Jack chuckled, “Be careful, those kids like to pretend they’re not smart and will take your shirt easily.”
Taylor laughed.
“Can you dial me up so I can report in?” he asked.
“Of course, sir,” Taylor said.
Jack waited a few minutes before the General’s voice came over his radio, “Report, Colonel.”
“Things are going fine,” Jack told him, “Unfortunately there’s a sandstorm so we’re all stuck inside for the night.”
“What about Dr Jackson?” Hammond asked, their special guest top priority right now.
Forcing himself not to grin, Jack replied, “Sha’re took him to the oasis today for a daytrip to stop him working. They’re stuck overnight but I’ve spoken with them both and he’s fine.”
“Good,” Hammond stated, “Considering we promised that he would be returned in perfect health.”
“Sha’re will bring him back in the morning,” Jack told him, “However, she is something I wanted to talk to you about.”
“Really?”
Jack grimaced at the tone in Hammond’s voice, “Before Sha’re came home after recuperating, we offered her a chance to stay on Earth. Kasuf wanted to know if the offer was still open.”
“It’s always open,” Hammond told him, “Sha’re is extremely smart, and I am happy she’s considering the offer.”
Jack smiled, “I’ll let her know. Thank you, sir.”
“Stargate has shut down,” Taylor spoke up after a moment.
“Have a good night, Taylor,” Jack told him, “Don’t get fleeced too much by the kids.”
Sha’re watched Daniel as he wrote in the notebook that she noticed he carried with him at all times. It was intriguing, both because she had never seen the written word until a few years before and most people when she had been on Earth used computers. The wind had died down slightly and Sha’re knew that the storm would be gone by morning.
“Can I ask you something?” Sha’re said, watching him put the notebook away once more.
Daniel shrugged, “Of course.”
“Why do you do that each night?” Sha’re asked softly before explaining, “Write in the small book.”
Leaning back against the wall Daniel gave a soft sigh, “When I was kid, my parents died and I…” as he hesitated, Sha’re sat at his side and took his hand making him smile at her, “I had some issues, mostly I refused to speak to anyone, so I was sent to a therapist. Because I wouldn’t speak, something several people these days wouldn’t believe,” he paused again as she chuckled, “She gave me a notebook, like the one I still use, leatherbound and clean pages, along with a pen. Told me I should use it to write down what I needed to say until my voice came back.”
“Did it help?”
He nodded, “Especially after she promised she would only read what I wanted her to see.”
“So, you still use it to write down your thoughts,” Sha’re smiled.
“My thoughts, any ideas I have and how I feel if I’m not sure how to say it,” Daniel explained before he smiled softly, “A couple of years ago, during one of the lectures I was doing for the show my old therapist appeared afterward. I showed her I still kept a notebook.”
“How wonderful that you were able to tell her that,” Sha’re said before standing once more, “Are you hungry?”
“A little,” Daniel replied.
She motioned him over to the fire, “Then come and eat.”
As he joined her and took the dinner she had made for him, Sha’re began to muse and by the end of their meal had come to a decision.
Daniel was relieved the wind was not as loud as it had been, it had brought up some memories. Not bad memories but ones he didn’t want to dwell on as they led to the bad ones.
It had been an unexpected pleasure to spend time with Sha’re all day without having to think about what he was here to do, and even though they hadn’t planned on being trapped here all night, Daniel was enjoying spending time with her. She was so different from any woman he’d ever known, and she made him laugh as well as found him funny for some reason.
She handed him some blankets to make a bed for the night, and Daniel busied himself not paying attention to what she was doing, surprised to find Sha’re watching him when he turned to her.
Without a word, Sha’re moved closer to him, and her lips touched his in a soft kiss. Daniel’s eyes closed at the warmth and taste of her soft lips, despite knowing he should pull back he deepened their kiss. Sha’re moaned softly and wrapped her arms around his neck. They parted then Sha’re slid her dress from her shoulders which slipped off her body like water and pooled at her feet.
“Sha’re…”
“We are here all night alone,” she reminded him stepping closer and taking his hand, “I thought we could have some fun.”
Daniel knew he should pull away, knew that he should stop staring at the woman in front of him, but he was mesmerised and as Sha’re pulled him towards her, he didn’t resist. She pulled him down onto the blankets he’d just laid out, Daniel kissed her once more.
Sha’re moaned softly as one of Daniel’s hands gently cupped her breast as he kissed her deeply, she’d never been touched like this, and she slid her fingers through his hair. They continued to kiss and Sha’re moaned in pleasure as Daniel’s hand moved down to her leg, his fingers gently skimming her thighs.
He pulled back suddenly and shook his head.
“What’s wrong?” Sha’re asked concerned.
“We shouldn’t do this,” he breathed, he grabbed one of the blankets and covered her.
Sha’re caught his hand before he could move away, “Tell me what’s wrong, because you were enjoying yourself.”
“I just…” he swallowed not looking in her eyes, “I don’t think it’s a good idea for us to sleep together. I don’t do one-night stands.”
“And you think I do?” she asked before continuing, “And it is not one-night, we have known one another a week. I care for you, and I know you care for me too.”
He looked up at her finally, sadness in his eyes, “Which means soon I will have to leave and know I’ll probably never get to see you again.”
Sha’re gently stroked his cheek, “Then why not say goodbye with a wonderful memory?”
He chuckled, “You are persuasive.”
“I know that we are saying goodbye soon,” she moved closer to him once more, her arms wrapping around his neck, “But before we do, I want to know that I didn’t miss a wonderful thing with you.”
Daniel brushed his lips to hers, “Are you sure? I know in your culture…”
“If I was unmarried, then there may be an issue,” Sha’re noted, “But I am widowed, no one cares.”
He hesitated, “We have no protection, you could get pregnant.”
“If I become with child then my people will accept it is a gift from my late husband,” Sha’re replied rolling her eyes, “My people are superstitious and can be slightly gullible about these things.”
“But what…”
“Stop,” Sha’re told him, “No excuses, Dan’iel. Do you want to spend tonight with me? Yes or no.”
He licked his lips nervously before nodding, “Yes.”
“Then that’s all we need,” she smiled, kissing him again as she pulled away the blanket that he’d covered her with, “I believe you are wearing far too much.”
Daniel smiled as he lay wrapped in the blankets with Sha’re curled up beside him, their fingers were entwined at his chest while he gently played with her hair with his other hand.
“That was nice,” Sha’re murmured.
“I didn’t hurt you?” he whispered, worried from the cry she’d made when he had slid into her.
Sha’re shook her head, “You are bigger than I have ever had but you didn’t hurt me.”
Daniel brushed his lips to her forehead, “Good.”
They cuddled together, getting their breath back enjoying being together.
“I saw your scar,” Daniel murmured softly, “Is that why you came to Earth?”
Sha’re nodded, “I lost Fahd and my baby, but gained the scar to remind me.”
“Baby?”
She blinked away a few tears, “No one else knew. We had just discovered I was pregnant.”
“I’m so sorry,” Daniel kissed her softly, “I didn’t mean…”
Sha’re sighed, “I know.” After a few moments of silence, she continued, “We were happy because it meant we no longer had to try. Fahd was a good man, but I did not love him in that way, and he did not love me.”
“Were you unhappy?”
Sha’re shrugged, “I was content with my life. You have to understand, Dan’iel, I had to marry as the daughter of the Chief Elder. My father gave me some freedom by telling all who wished to court me to come so he could evaluate them. It allowed me a chance to meet each and give him my thoughts.”
Daniel stayed silent, his hand simply moving from her hair to stroke her back comfortingly.
“Fahd came from one of the outlying farms, and he brought me flowers. The only one to bring a gift,” Sha’re smiled at the memory, “He asked me to show him Nagada so I showed him around. It was during our walk he told me why he had brought his friend, Nabu.”
Intrigued Daniel asked, “And why was that?”
“Because they were more than friends,” Sha’re explained, “And he was hoping that by marrying me that I would not have to worry about being trapped in a marriage while he and Nabu could be together also.”
“You agreed?”
Sha’re nodded, “It made so much sense. I did not have to worry about a husband making demands on me, and we could always welcome Nabu into our home as a dear friend.”
“Was that who I saw you with earlier this week?”
She sighed, “He is lost in his grief, and he comes every few months to visit Fahd’s memorial.”
“Do you…”
“I grieved,” Sha’re told him, “But I have said goodbye to that part of my life.”
Daniel hugged her closer to him, not sure what to say. Sha’re however had had enough rest and she slid up to kiss him again. Daniel wrapped his arms around her once more forcing away the thoughts that very soon this would be over.
“What about you?” Sha’re asked suddenly, “Have you ever been married?”
Daniel shook his head, “Came close once, but I decided instead to publish my theories which she didn’t agree with, and it ended.”
“But your theories were right,” Sha’re reminded him.
Daniel laughed, “Which she admitted the next time I saw her after we broke up.”
With a soft kiss, Sha’re pulled him back onto her and they lost themselves in one another again.
Daniel sighed in his sleep, aware of warmth and weight against him. A soft feminine breath in his ear made him slowly open his eyes to find Sha’re sleeping cuddled close to him under the blanket. He’d never felt so comfortable with anyone in his life. Sha’re had this genuine kindness that he noticed made everyone at ease in her presence, not to mention she was incredibly intelligent, and Daniel loved that she was able to keep up with him. There were so few people who could, but her mind was sparkling and if she had been born in a different place then she would be changing the world.
Sha’re let out a small sigh, cuddling into his shoulder before she murmured, “You make a good pillow.”
Daniel managed to reply nonchalantly, “Well, it’s good to know I’m useful for something.”
Sha’re let out a soft laugh before her lips touched his in a soft kiss. Daniel’s eyes closed as he savoured the feel of her lips on his, on the way her fingers were sliding through his hair, and he deepened the kiss. Sha’re let out a soft moan as her arms wrapped around him, and Daniel pulled her close to him.
He would be leaving Abydos very soon, back to reality where his life was talking about the wonders beyond the Stargate.
The thing was he knew that he would give it all up just so he could stay with Sha’re. They may have only known one another for about a week but he was deeply and crazily in love with her.
He knew though no one would let him, so he had to soak in all the time he had with her instead.
Chapter 6

Yeah, a new chapter so quickly.

Chapter Text
A call from Jack over the radio to check in on them, forced Daniel and Sha’re to leave the cocoon of blankets they’d spent the night in. Finally dressed, Sha’re packed up the cave while Daniel stayed out of her way, since he was hindering more than helping. Getting ready to return to Nagada, both avoiding the thought that Daniel was leaving soon.
Sha’re slipped her hand into his as Daniel carried the bag, and they started walking away from the oasis.
“Thank you for bringing me here,” Daniel said softly, “It was nice to get away from work for the night, and especially for keeping my mind off the storm.”
Sha’re gave him a smile, “I enjoyed it as well. I am guessing you do not take time to relax often.”
“Well, I…” he shrugged, “I do a lot of things as well as the show, I need to read up on everything we get sent from by the SGC, not to mention we do college and school visits around the country, as well as lectures the public can come to.” Daniel looked at her and sighed, “I also don’t have anyone really to spend time with, so working is better.”
Sha’re slipped her arm through his and asked him more questions. They talked as they walked; Daniel surprised at himself as he talked about his childhood in Egypt with her, and he opened up to her in a way he had never opened up to anyone.
They were getting near the edge of the city, walking along a crop of rocks that were a little uneven. Daniel stumbled and Sha’re took the opportunity to kiss him once more before they reached Nagada. A screech came from above them and looking up Daniel saw what appeared to be a small ship above them.
“Oh no,” Sha’re cried, grabbing his arm and pulling him towards the edge of the rocks, “Give me the radio.”
Daniel quickly obeyed worried.
“Jack,” Sha’re called, “There is a Goa’uld ship in the air.”
“Got it,” he told her, “The shield is holding, where are you and Daniel?”
Sha’re sighed, “We’re at the rocks near the pyramid, but we are not close enough to the shield to be hidden.”
Daniel listened confused but remained silent.
“Do you think it saw you?” Jack asked.
Before Sha’re could reply the ship returned to the sky above them and it was definitely lower than below.
“I think so,” Sha’re whispered fearfully.
“We’re coming,” Jack told her, “Find a place and hide.”
Sha’re grabbed Daniel’s arm and they started into the rock formation, finding a cave that although it wasn’t that big allowed both of them to stand inside.
“What’s happening?” Daniel whispered.
“It is a ship from another Goa’uld,” Sha’re told him, “They come every so often to see if there is anything on a planet for them since they cannot access the Stargate.”
“They can’t?” Daniel demanded stunned before shaking his head and asking, “What is the shield?”
“There is a shield that surrounds the city that doesn’t affect us, but any ships only see a barren planet,” Sha’re told him, “I will explain later where it came from.”
They peeked out and saw that the ship had landed, a large man carrying a staff weapon stepped out of the ship.
“If he finds us then he will report to whoever his master is that there are people on Abydos,” Sha’re told him, “We can’t let that happen.”
“What do you want to do?” Daniel asked concerned.
Her lips pressed together in deep thought before Sha’re told him, “He is moving towards the oasis and not the city. If we can access the ship, report there is nothing here, and make it appear as though the ship is destroyed by an accident then we should ensure we are not discovered.” She paused before asking him, “You can speak the language, correct?”
Daniel nodded.
“Good, then you will have to report both nothing here but an issue with the ship which will mean it explodes,” Sha’re finished.
“What?”
She frowned at him, “It is the only way to protect my people.”
Daniel stared at her, “Sha’re, I’m not sure I can do this.”
“He is nowhere near the ship,” she assured him, “By the time we do this, Jack should be here.” She took his hands and looked up at him pleadingly with big brown eyes, “Please.”
Daniel sighed, knowing he was completely lost because just her looking into his eyes and asking for the moon, he would do it. For her.
“Okay,” Daniel nodded.
She kissed him quickly before looking out once more.
“Come on,” she motioned him to follow her.
He left the bag, keeping the radio with him though and followed Sha’re out the cave and down to the ship sitting there. He frowned as he looked trying to find a way into the ship.
“Here, Dan’iel,” Sha’re motioned him to her, she pressed a hidden button which then opened the ship up. He followed as she climbed in and studied the controls.
“I need you to tell the ship above that the planet is barren,” Sha’re explained, “But then tell them you are having problems with your systems.”
Daniel nodded.
“Once we do that then we will overload the engine so it explodes,” Sha’re told him, “The Jaffa will be stranded but Jack will deal with him.”
“If you’re sure,” Daniel took a deep breath.
Sha’re caught his arm, “Be gruff and to the point.”
He nodded and as Sha’re activated the comm system barked what Sha’re had told him to say. While telling them that he was having trouble with the systems, Sha’re played with the controls to make it see that the radio was going in and out before she cut it off.
“Can you overload the engine?” Daniel asked her.
Sha’re nodded, “Samantha showed me once.”
Daniel watched and grabbed her hand to run as a whine came from the ship. They saw the Jaffa coming towards them, but he was thrown back as the ship exploded while Daniel pulled Sha’re down, covering her with his body to protect her.
“Sha’re? Daniel?” Jack’s voice came, “What happened? Are you alright?”
“We took care of the ship,” Sha’re called back as she tugged Daniel’s hand to start running as the Jaffa came towards them, “But we need help.”
An explosion in front of them, made them stop and turn to find the Jaffa holding his staff weapon on them.
“You will die for this,” he snarled.
Daniel asked, “For what? Your ship exploded when we came to you for help.”
“You did something,” the Jaffa snapped moving towards them.
“No, my lord,” Daniel answered, improvising for all he was worth, “My wife and I were stranded here when we escaped from the evil god Apophis. We have been trying to get to our great light Heru-Ur to warn him of plans Apophis has of moving against him.”
The Jaffa looked at them suspiciously, “This planet has no inhabitants and the Chappa-aii is blocked.
“We were betrayed by those whose ship we were on and stranded here,” Sha’re spoke up, “My Lord, we wish to give the information we have to our God.”
The Jaffa stared at them, he finally nodded, “When a rescue ship comes then I only need one of you. Which one will it be?”
Daniel instantly stepped in front of Sha’re protectively, but before anyone could say anything else, Jack arrived with SG1 and the Abydos militia. Daniel moved when Sha’re pulled him out of the way, and they watched the fight. Another screech above them signalled a rescue ship coming but Sha’re smiled at him when Daniel turned to her worriedly.
“We are all under the shield,” she whispered, “It will only see the exploded ship.”
As she predicted the ship did a flyover before it disappeared above them and they all sighed in relief.
“So,” Jack moved over to them, “How was your trip?”
“Father,” Sha’re grinned as she entered his tent, “Jack said you wanted to see me.”
Kasuf opened his arms and Sha’re obediently hugged him, laughing as he held onto her tightly.
“My dearest daughter,” Kasuf smiled, pride in his voice before asking mischievously, “How was your trip to the Oasis?”
Smiling sweetly Sha’re nodded, “It was good. Dan’iel was a fine considerate companion. Even with the little bit of excitement on our way home.”
“Sit, Sha’re,” Kasuf said, “I have something to discuss with you.”
A little confused, and concerned, Sha’re took a seat and waited.
“I do not like seeing you unhappy,” Kasuf told her.
“I am not…” Sha’re started, trailing off when he frowned at her.
“All your friends are married and having children,” Kasuf reminded her, “And I see you have no interest in marrying again. To anyone here anyway.”
Sha’re felt her cheeks heat at her father’s knowing smile.
“Colonel O’Neill and I have had a conversation,” Kasuf continued, ignoring her blush, “He reminded me that you are always welcome to return to Earth. You learned a great deal while you were there and I know you miss that.”
Sha’re shrugged, “I do, Father but if I am not here who will look after you.”
“I am not incapable,” Kasuf reminded her amused, “And it is not as though you would never come back here. I will not press you for an answer just now but think it over while the team from Earth are here.”
Hugging him again, Sha’re left the tent deep in thought, she had loved her time on Earth, especially because there were no obligations upon her. As she walked, Sha’re spotted Daniel standing with his camera filming again.
It occurred to her that if she returned with the team to Earth then she would get to spend more time with Daniel. They would be on the same planet at least so they could find a way if he still wanted to.
She had agreed to help him whilst on Abydos, not just because her English was the best in Nagada, but she had seen the show so understood what he’d want to see. Admittedly she was looking forward to meeting him, as she had found him attractive on screen but hadn’t expected to like him so much.
“So,” Jack’s voice came from behind her making Sha’re turn, “What are you thinking? Are you coming back with us?”
Sha’re frowned at him, “It is not that simple, Jack.”
He wrapped his arm around her, “Actually, it is. Do you want to come? Forgetting about everything else, is it what you want?”
Looking up at him, Sha’re nodded.
“Okay,” Jack grinned, “Then I will talk to Hammond while you tell Kasuf.”
Hugging him tightly Sha’re headed back to talk to her father.
Jack ran into Daniel after talking to Hammond, the younger man was sitting with his camera and filming the horizon from the edge of the city.
“Hey,” Jack greeted to him, “Have you got everything you need?”
Daniel nodded, “I’m just getting some wide shots.”
“And you okay after your run in with the Jaffa?” Jack asked concerned, hoping they hadn’t traumatised Daniel, Hammond would not be happy.
“A little stunned we survived till you got there,” Daniel told him, “But Sha’re knew what she was doing.”
Jack grinned, “Yeah, that girl soaks in information. And I may have trained her a bit without realising.”
Daniel laughed before frowning in thought. “She mentioned Abydos has a shield. Where did that come from because I don’t remember seeing anything about that in the briefing.”
“Believe it or not, Dr Jackson,” Jack said, “We don’t give all our information to you to put out into the world.”
“I’m getting that,” Daniel replied dryly.
Jack chuckled, “When Sha’re was on Earth, we ended up taking her with us to meet a people called the Cimmerians who we’d become friendly with.”
Daniel frowned as the name did not sound familiar however he remained silent.
“Their ‘Gods’ were based on Norse mythology and to make a very long story short,” Jack said, “We met the gods who turned out to be the grey aliens. Sha’re made friends with Thor, the protector of Cimmeria. She told him about her home and how we’d given them an Iris to protect them, but they were still vulnerable to attacks from above. So, he set up the shield to protect Nagada, the pyramid and the outlying farms.”
“All because of Sha’re?” Daniel asked, a smile on his lips.
Jack nodded, “All because that girl gets what she wants. You might want to remember that.”
Standing Jack gave him a nod, “See you later, Dr Jackson.”
After Jack left him alone, Daniel stood to film the daily life of Nagada, smiling as he watched children run around under the vigilant eyes of their parents who were working on their daily chores. He loved the feeling of being here, it reminded him so much of his own childhood and he was going to miss it.
They were leaving tomorrow, although he wanted to show Maddie everything and put together the show properly, he was going to miss this place and Sha’re especially.
Daniel tended to avoid romantic entanglements, after his relationship with Sarah crashed and burned so badly it made him cautious of getting involved. Then he became famous. Suddenly people wanted to meet him because of who they saw on TV and thought he was. Sha’re was the first woman in a long time who saw him, he enjoyed her company, and after the night before he was deeply in love with her.
He didn’t want to say goodbye.
Shutting down the camera, Daniel turned to find Sha’re walking towards him.
“Hi,” he smiled.
Smiling at him, Sha’re asked the moment she reached him, “What are you doing?”
“Just getting some shots of Nagada,” Daniel told her, “Even if we don’t use them, I want them because it reminds me of where I grew up and will let me remember this amazing week.”
Sha’re smiled, she took a seat at the wall near them and motioned Daniel to join her.
“Can I ask you something?” Sha’re said.
“Whatever you want,” Daniel replied without thinking.
She licked her lips nervously before saying, “When I come to Earth, would you have a meal with me?”
Surprised Daniel nodded, “Of course. When are you coming? I can make sure I can arrange my schedule so I can be in Colorado at the same time.”
“Actually,” she told him, “I am joining you when you return to Earth tomorrow.”
“What?”
Sha’re laughed at his surprise before explaining, “I am the daughter of the Chief Elder, but I have no place here. I married because it was expected, and he was a good man but now I am a widow. My brother will take place as Chief Elder one day while I will just be here. Jack offered me a chance to return to Earth and continue learning. I want that but I also want to spend some more time with you.”
Taken aback, Daniel finally managed to reply, “I’d like that.” A thoughtful look covered his face before he noted, “After the show comes out it will be the topic of the next series of lectures I do,” he shrugged, “You could join us to do them since you are the expert on Abydos.”
Sha’re slipped her hand into his, rested her head against his shoulder, “That sounds like a good idea.”
Smiling Daniel rested his head against hers and they sat watching the people of Abydos go about their day together.

Chapter Text
Maddie stood in the control room with the camera ready to capture Daniel returning from Abydos. She was excited to see what he’d recorded while on the other planet and hear all about his week there. Although she also knew that it was going to be hard to edit everything down for the show since she’d not been there to film and keep him on track.
The Stargate suddenly jumped to life and so did the soldiers. Maddie watched the Iris close as the defence team took their posts while Walter waited for the signal.
“It’s an SG1 signal,” Walter turned to Hammond who had appeared from upstairs.
“Open the Iris,” Hammond ordered.
Ensuring the camera was on, Maddie watched the metal shielding slide back and the blue water shimmer in the centre of the Stargate lit the room. A moment of stillness was interrupted by the return of SG1, Daniel and a woman Maddie recognised from her photograph as Sha’re, the daughter of Abydos Chief Elder who had been Daniel’s guide on Abydos.
Once they reached the bottom of the ramp, Maddie kept the camera on Daniel as the team’s weapons and packs were taken before they walked out the Gateroom to get their health check.
Daniel hugged Maddie when he entered the office.
“How did things go here?” he asked.
“Fine, “Maddie rolled her eyes before demanding excitedly, “How was your week?”
“Incredible,” Daniel enthused, “Maddie, it was the most amazing place, with wonderful people that I could have stayed there for months, and I have superb footage.”
“That’s great,” she said, “I can’t wait to hear all about it.”
“First,” he said, “I have to join the post-mission meeting and then…”
“You rest for the remainder of the day,” Maddie told him, “We’re heading home tomorrow, and we can start working on putting the show together then.”
Daniel grimaced, “Actually, I’m going to stay here for a few more days. Sha’re, who showed me around Abydos, is moving to Earth and I promised to take her for dinner to thank her for all her help.”
“Oh,” she blinked in surprise.
Daniel shrugged, “Then once she gets sorted here, I invited her to join us while we put together the show.”
Maddie chuckled, “You’re letting someone else into the editing room?”
“She is interested in how we make the show and after she showed me around, I felt it was only fair she got to see how we put it together,” Daniel told her, “If possible, I was thinking that we could have her join us while we do the lecture tour. Her insight would be invaluable.”
Forcing an amused smile off her face, Maddie nodded, “Well, I’ll make sure there are three uncomfortable chairs for us.”
Rolling his eyes, Daniel grabbed his notebook and left the room once more as Maddie chuckled to herself.
“Thank you for your hospitality, General,” Daniel said as he shook hands with the other man, “It has been an amazing few weeks, being able to speak with everyone about the programme, not to mention getting to go through the Stargate.”
Hammond smiled, “I am grateful that you kept the disruption to a minimum. And I may be trying to steal Maddie from you soon.”
Daniel chuckled.
“I have been assured by your producer,” Hammond stated, “But I wanted to talk to you directly…”
“You will have the final say over the finished episode,” Daniel assured him, “I promise you. Once we’ve edited it together then I will personally let you see the finished show for your sign off.”
Hammond nodded, “Have a good trip, Dr Jackson.”
Leaving Hammond’s office, Daniel smiled finding Sha’re standing there waiting for him.
“You are leaving,” she said softly.
He nodded, “I have to. I have to get back to work.”
“If Jack agrees then I will join you in a few days,” Sha’re reminded him softly, “If you still…”
Daniel nodded, “As long as you don’t mind spending all day sitting in on us putting together the show. It’s not the most exciting thing in the world.”
“I am looking forward to it,” Sha’re offered him a piece of paper, “Until then, I thought you would like this.”
Daniel looked down at the neatly written number, “New phone?”
“Actually, old phone,” Sha’re replied, “Jack gave it to me the last time I was on Earth. I’m hoping you keep in touch.”
Daniel reached out and stroked her cheek with his thumb, “I promise I will.”
He looked around to check that they were alone before he touched his lips to hers in a soft kiss.
Maddie looked up at the knock on the door of the editing room, Daniel jumped up to answer it and hugged whoever was there.
Turning Maddie saw the woman who had guided Daniel around Abydos standing there. Rather than the desert robes she had been wearing when Maddie last saw her, she was wearing a maxi dress with a bright flower print, her long hair was straightened and flowing down her back. The woman smiled brightly as Daniel embraced her quickly before he moved her into the room.
“Maddie,” Daniel turned, guiding Sha’re with a hand at her waist, “This is Sha’re, Sha’re this is my assistant, Maddie.”
“It is a pleasure to finally meet you,” Sha’re said offering her hand, “Dan’iel spoke of you often.”
Maddie grinned, shaking the other woman’s hand, “He has mentioned you once or twice recently too. I’ve also seen some of the footage of you he took, you’re such a natural in front of the camera.”
Sha’re blushed slightly.
“Take a seat and we’ll show you what we’re doing,” Daniel said, guiding Sha’re to a seat so she could watch them editing the show.
Maddie restarted the section they were working on, and Daniel explained what they were doing as she cut down the interview into a manageable chunk.
The next few days as they edited, Sha’re sat with them. She asked questions, insightful ones to Maddie’s surprise, as well as made some suggestions. Quietly to Daniel at first until she gained some confidence and told them both.
“Okay,” Maddie stated as she got back from getting them sandwiches, tea and coffee, seeing Daniel and Sha’re pull apart quickly, “Please stop. You guys are clearly together, and you don’t need to pretend around me that you’re not.”
Daniel grimaced, “Sorry, Maddie. We’re just not wanting to advertise while we get to know one another properly.”
“And when have I ever told anyone anything?” Maddie asked, trying to keep a straight face, “Daniel, I will say nothing and,” she continued before he could say anything, “I will ensure Sha’re is included when I don’t answer any question people ask about you.”
Daniel smiled at her, “Thank you, Maddie. I should have known I could count on you, since you protect me at every other turn.”
“It’s my job,” she shrugged, “And I do love winding up journalists.”
Sha’re chuckled.
“Okay,” Daniel said, “Let’s get back to work.”
Sha’re leaned over to Maddie as Daniel grabbed his coffee, “Thank you.”
“Do not hurt him or I become your enemy,” Maddie said seriously.
“I promise, I will try never to hurt him,” Sha’re whispered, “I definitely don’t want you as my enemy.”
They smiled at one another before turning back to the screen as Daniel rejoined them.
“For the last few years, I have told you of the wonders that have been found through the Stargate. The next two episodes are going to be different from our normal shows, because I was given the opportunity to spend time within Stargate Command and got to know the incredible people who work for this amazing place.”
Daniel watched Hammond nervously as the General, along with Colonel O’Neill, sat in his office to watch the final cut of the show.
“So, what does that mean?” the version of Daniel on the screen said, “It means, that the unedited version of the next two episodes are about forty-eight hours long. Luckily, we managed to condense all our footage, I will admit with great difficulty, and the people you will get to meet are those who make the SGC what it is.”
The scene moved to the opening credits which showed different parts of the SGC, before it returned to Daniel.
“I thought long and hard of where to start this episode,” Daniel stated, “Finally deciding to start at the top. As you know, the commander of the SGC is General George Hammond.”
The next scene went over Hammond’s record before it returned to Daniel sitting across from the General.
“Thank you for not only agreeing to talk to me, General,” Daniel stated, “But also for allowing me into the base. I am looking forward to getting to know the people here. Before I do, I wanted to ask you about your position within Stargate Command.”
After the interview with Hammond, the episode moved on, and Daniel explained each department talking with Jack as the leader of SG1 then a few other SG team leaders, it then jumped to the different science teams with Daniel asking questions of them. These were interspersed with details and animations of experiments that had been done before Daniel joined the technical staff, janitorial and the canteen staff.
Everyone he talked with was greeted as being as important as everyone else, and Daniel glanced over when Hammond chuckled a few times. They reached the final few moments of the first episode and Daniel appeared on the screen again.
“The one thing I have enjoyed most about being here within Stargate Command, or the SGC, as it is referred to by everyone here, is the people who work under the mountain. From the scientists to the soldiers, to the support staff everyone believes in what they do here and the hope for the future the Stargate gives us,” he paused, and the shot pulled out revealing that he was wearing the beige SG team gear for missions in sandy surroundings, “And today I get to see that hope for myself. SG1 have agreed to let me tag along with them on their next mission through the Stargate. So, for the next week I will be on Abydos getting to see all the important places that helped start this amazing project and meeting the people of the world which has a culture similar to that of Ancient Egypt,” he paused and grinned, “I’m hoping there will be at least some footage where I’m able to talk properly because I cannot explain how excited I am.”
At this point the episode ended, and the credits began.
Daniel turned to Hammond, “Well, General?”
“Second episode?” Hammond asked.
Daniel nodded, “Okay. I’ll get that loaded up.”
“Coffee, sir?” Jack spoke up as he moved to get himself some. Hammond nodded and waited for Jack to refresh the coffee for them all before they started the next episode.
Daniel watched the screen that showed him leaving the SGC with SG1, before it jumped to his first steps on Abydos. As it moved to Sha’re, he smiled. On screen she was luminous, and Daniel could just watch her all day. Maddie had reminded him that he was meant to appear on screen as well, as he kept trying to cut any shots of him in favour of Sha’re.
They went through the pyramid, the cartouche as well as all the important parts of Abydos before Daniel showed the people of Abydos going about their daily life.
The show ended with Daniel coming back through the Stargate to the SGC.
“What we were shown was only a tiny part of the worlds that have been opened up to us by the SGC and of the people who walk through those worlds for us,” Daniel stated, “I have been privileged to spend time within the SGC and with the people of Abydos. I hope the last two episodes have shown just what an amazing venture the SGC is and that I have answered at least some of your questions.”
The screen faded to black before the end credits came again.
Daniel bit his lip for a moment before turning to the two men sitting there, waiting for their thoughts on the show.
“That was very well done, Dr Jackson,” Hammond stated, “I have no objections to anything you put in the shows.”
Relief filled Daniel, “That’s good to know, General. I am a believer in what you all do here. Not to mention if I ever quit the show, I’m hoping for a job here so don’t want to trash anyone.”
Jack chuckled, “I’m thinking that after all those long lingering shots of Sha’re, we might want to set her up a fan club.”
Daniel laughed, “She looks better on screen than I do, plus she was the one explaining everything. No need to see me.”
Hammond smiled, “Well, I look forward to sitting and watching it with my granddaughters. They’ll be very excited that I’m on the TV.”
“I’ll escort Dr Jackson out,” Jack told Hammond after Daniel shook hands with the other man once more.
As they left the room, Jack turned to Daniel, “Good show. Charlie will love it, especially with Sha’re on it. She seemed to enjoy helping you.”
Daniel smiled slightly, “Her help was invaluable.”
“I’m betting it was,” Jack chuckled, “So, what are you doing now you’ve finished the show?”
“We have a lecture tour planned to coincide with the shows,” Daniel told him, adding softly, “I asked Sha’re if she’d like to join us for it. I’m sure after the show everyone will have questions for her.”
“From all she said to Sara while helping you, I’m sure that she will be very interested,” Jack chuckled, not saying another word as they headed to the elevator to leave the mountain.
Chapter 8
Notes:
Here is the final chapter.
It took me a while to write this as it was a bit of a weird chapter.
Hope you enjoy.
Chapter Text
The previews for the Abydos special episode showed no footage from the new episode, by the insistence of Daniel, it only showed his final speech from the previous one to build suspense and Maddie was watching the forums explode with excitement.
Everyone knew that Daniel wanted to go through the Stargate, anytime he was on a talk show to promote the show he mentioned it. So, the fact he had finally been allowed to, had caused a lot of anticipation to see what had happened.
Due to the nature of the shows and the fact they knew it would be impossible to keep the contents under wraps, literally the day General Hammond had signed off on the show it was confirmed in the schedule for the start of the next month. They were waiting for confirmation that Sha’re would be able to do the lecture tour, considering she was not native to Earth, and that additional security might be needed.
Daniel had returned to Colorado so that he could watch the second show with the O’Neill family and Sha’re, Charlie was especially excited Daniel was visiting again and had been standing watching out the window all day waiting for him to arrive.
“Okay,” Jack called, getting the attention of the group out in the back garden where they’d been sitting after dinner, “Show starts in five minutes. Get in here and get comfy.”
Charlie came running into the living room and threw himself into his beanbag, excited to see the show while Sara, Sha’re and Daniel walked in at a more leisurely pace.
Jack caught his wife around the waist and pressed a quick kiss to her cheek as he moved her to the couch at the right, ensuring that Daniel and Sha’re sat together. He knew they didn’t mind, but until they told people they were a couple, Jack and Sara were letting them pretend that no one knew. For now, anyway.
Jack organised drinks as Charlie turned the TV to the right channel, frowning at the adults who were still talking.
“Quiet,” he told them annoyed, “It’s starting soon.”
“We’re sorry,” Daniel smiled slightly, “We’ll be good.”
Charlie nodded, turning back to the television as the show began. Although Jack had already seen the show, he rewatched enjoying Charlie’s reactions to everything. Jack could tell that he was especially loving seeing Sha’re on the show. Charlie adored Sha’re, she became like an older sister to him while she recovered and had been devastated when she’d returned home.
Glancing over to where Sha’re and Daniel were sitting, he could see they were unthinkingly cuddling together as the show progressed. He shared an amused smile with Sara as they watched Sha’re rest her head against Daniel’s shoulder while he wrapped his arm around her.
When the show finished and Jack turned the light back on, he chuckled to himself seeing them quickly move away from one another.
“What did you think, Charlie?” Daniel asked, moving the focus of the room to Jack and Sara’s son.
“That was amazing,” Charlie told him, “Sha’re was so good explaining everything.”
“Yes, she was,” Daniel agreed, smiling at Sha’re who blushed while biting her lower lip shyly.
Jack rolled his eyes, wincing when Sara smacked his arm.
“And it’s your bedtime,” Sara told her son, “Say goodnight to Daniel and Sha’re.”
Charlie sighed but moved to hug Sha’re goodnight before he turned to Daniel.
“Night, Dr Jackson.”
“Goodnight, Charlie,” Daniel said smiling before he added, “And since we’re friends now, I think you should call me Daniel.”
Charlie grinned and threw his arms around Daniel, “Goodnight, Daniel.”
Jack chuckled and caught his son in his arms for a hug before passing him to Sara.
“I should probably head back to the hotel,” Daniel told them, “I’ll see you tomorrow for the meeting.”
Jack nodded.
“I will walk you to the door,” Sha’re said softly, and Jack took the hint leaving them alone to help Sara put Charlie to bed.
Daniel sighed as he stood with Sha’re in the doorway of Jack and Sara’s house. It wasn’t easy pretending that he wasn’t hopelessly in love with her but right now, Sha’re didn’t want anyone else to know they were together – other than Maddie. Being with him was her choice but on Abydos everyone knew everything and right now she wanted to keep their relationship just to them.
“I’ll see you tomorrow,” he whispered to her, brushing his lips to hers before sighing, “Wish I didn’t have to leave. I’ve missed you for the past few weeks.”
Sha’re rested her head against his, “I missed you too,” she sighed, “I…”
“Hey,” Daniel held her close, “I understand why you don’t want to tell anyone yet.”
Sha’re kissed him properly, they broke apart and Daniel winced to find Sara and Jack standing there.
“This…” Daniel started, not sure what to say.
“We’ll see you both at the base tomorrow,” Sara said, handing Sha’re an overnight bag. At their stunned faces she laughed, shaking her head at her husband who was watching them amused, “You’re not quite as subtle as you think when you’re together. Not sure why you’re trying to hide this but it’s your choice. Just go and be together.”
Sha’re hugged Sara then Jack quickly before taking Daniel’s hand who led her out to his car.
Daniel paced as he checked his notes once more before he looked out at the crowd. The hall was packed as the lecture had sold out almost instantly the day after the second show. Sha’re was sitting watching him, having already worked out that interrupting him would be counterproductive. Maddie was doing final checks on the equipment for the lecture and the Q&A afterwards.
Daniel finally took the seat beside Sha’re, who slipped her hand into his.
“You are nervous,” she said confused.
Daniel nodded, “A little.”
“But you do this all the time,” she reminded him, “Why are you nervous?”
He shrugged, “I always get slight flashbacks to the lecture I gave where my theories were ridiculed, even though I know I’m right.”
“You will be amazing,” she whispered, “I know this.”
“So will you,” Daniel reminded her, “But if you’re worried while on stage at all just talk to me.”
Sha’re nodded before leaning in to kiss him.
The applause was thunderous as Daniel stepped out onto the stage. He had done this multiple times since his disastrous lecture when he’d first presented his theories, but the shadow of what had happened that day still meant he got nervous.
“Thank you everyone for coming,” Daniel said as the applause died down, “It’s so good of you all to come out to hear me talk. Don’t worry I will not be droning on for the full time. We have some clips that we couldn’t get into the shows, but we wanted people to see, and I have a few special guests as well for you.” He paused and smiled, “So, let’s get started with a few clips that we didn’t put in the show and that make me look like a bit of an idiot.”
The lights dimmed and clips of Daniel sliding down the sand, tripping over his words and starting to laugh unable to stop.
The lights came back up and Daniel shook his head, before laughing, “Let’s get on with what I came here to talk about and that is my visit to the SGC.”
Daniel went through his talk, getting laughs at the right time. Finally, he reached the section on Abydos.
“Before we go any further,” Daniel stated, “I have a very special guest to help me discuss my time on Abydos. She was my guide for the week and not only kept me on topic when my assistant Maddie wasn’t there to stop me going off on a tangent. She also showed me the city of Nagada and parts of Abydos not connected to the Stargate. Please welcome, Sha’re.”
Sha’re walked out a little nervously to the cheers, relaxing when Daniel took her hand to lead her to the chair set out for her. The audience reaction was exactly what he knew it would be.
Daniel squeezed her hand comfortingly before taking his seat again and started the conversation on what they’d seen on Abydos, Sha’re was hesitant at first but soon relaxed and made everyone laugh with her observations.
When they came to the question-and-answer section, there were a few things she had to ask him to explain to her, but to Daniel’s relief it went smoothly. Even with the marriage proposals she received from more than one audience member.
Leaving the stage, Daniel turned to Sha’re, “How do you feel?”
“It was fun,” she told him, “And it feels strange that we will have the same conversation multiple times, but I am looking forward to doing it again.”
Daniel hugged her, “Good because I’m looking forward to spending every day with you.”
He has told us about ancient civilizations and what has been found through the Stargate for the past five years on his popular documentaries. With millions of fans around the country, his lecture tours are always sold out and he receives multiple marriage proposals each month.
Today the show’s official website has announced that Dr Daniel Jackson has married Sha’re of Abydos.
The official announcement stated that the wedding was small, attended by a few friends of the groom, members of the SGC who both are close to and the family of the bride.
The couple met when Dr Jackson travelled to Abydos for a special episode of his popular documentary series, and from what could be seen on the show, as well as the lecture tour she joined him for afterwards, they had instant chemistry.
The happy couple will be spending the next month on Sha’re’s homeworld celebrating with her family before they return to Earth.
Daniel sat in the small office he’d been given to use in the SGC while Sha’re sorted everything she needed to do before they headed to Abydos for their honeymoon. He’d meant to wait until after the tour, but they were in New York and, after the lecture on the second night in the city, Daniel took her to the top of the Empire State Building so she could see what all the fuss was about.
While they stood looking at the stars, his proposal slipped out and, to his amazement, Sha’re said yes instantly.
Three weeks after they finished the tour, to give some time to organise everything, they were married.
Daniel was now trying to work out what he should do. He knew that Hammond would give him a job within the SGC if he asked, but he did still enjoy doing his show which took him all over the country.
He had a full month to decide where his future lay, other than with his new wife.
“Hey,” Maddie appeared in the office, “Please tell me you’re not working.”
“Just sending a few emails before we leave,” Daniel told her, “Sha’re is making sure she has everything for our trip.”
Maddie grinned, “I’m so happy for you and Sha’re. While you’re away I am going to be here keeping things afloat.”
“Here as in on Earth,” Daniel asked curiously, “Or here in the SGC?”
Maddie shrugged, “The SGC for the moment.”
“Just make sure I don’t have to fight too hard to get you away from here once I get home,” Daniel told her.
Rolling her eyes, Maddie closed his laptop, “If you don’t get out of here, you won’t have that issue, but you also won’t have a wife.” She laughed, “You’re expected in the Gateroom.”
Turning to her, Daniel said, “Thank you for everything. I’m not sure what’s going to happen…”
“If we continue with the show, I will be there,” Maddie smiled, “But if you decide to move on, I will take General Hammond’s offer to work here.”
Daniel hugged her.
“Now get out of here,” Maddie motioned him out the door, “Enjoy your honeymoon.”
Heading to the Gateroom, Daniel found his bag sitting at the door waiting for him as Sha’re stood with Jack and Sara, they’d made their goodbyes to Charlie the day before since he had school today.
Jack moved to Daniel’s side and offered his hand, “Have a good honeymoon, Dr Jackson. Make sure you keep making Sha’re smile.”
“I promise, Colonel,” Daniel shook his hand, “We’ll see you in a month.”
As the Stargate began to dial, Daniel moved to Sha’re’s side accepting a quick hug from Sara before taking his new wife’s hand as the Gate opened.
“Confirmation from Abydos,” the technician told them, “You have a go.”
Hand in hand, the couple walked up the ramp and through the Stargate ready for their future together.
