Chapter 1: Character Reference

Chapter Text

Welcome to the Companion Document for The Lion and The Lotus!

The first chapter reads like a fantasy novel as is, so you can jump right into it. 😀 Since there are quite a few characters introduced fairly quickly in the first three chapters, as requested by some fandom-blind readers, I’ve provided this page as a character cheat sheet. Click on the links to see what they look like! 😃

I've also added some quick Wiki Links and Resources!

If you like what you see, I would recommend taking a look at the relevant Lore for this story.

Feel free also to check out this story's Official Art and Fan Art!

Students of the Officer's Academy

Students of the Officer's Academy

Map of Fódlan

Fodlan Territories

Image and Text From: Serenes Forest

Three Houses takes place on a brand new continent called Fodlan. On this continent, there are three major nations: the Adrestian Empire, the Holy Kingdom of Faerghus and the Leicester Alliance. Currently, these three nations co-exist in relative harmony.

Upholding the peace and order of Fodlan is the Church of Seiros, which holds great power. The church was founded by the followers of the Divine Seiros, who received a revelation from the Goddess.

The Church’s home base is located at the heart of Fodlan, in a place known as the Garreg Mach Monastery. Here, there’s an officer’s academy where the youth who hold the future of Fodlan have gathered to study.

The two major struggles to know about:

Tragedy of Duscur: fandom.com (please read)

  • Someone assassinated King Lambert of Faerghus.
  • The people of neighboring country, Duscur, were turned into a scapegoat.
  • Faerghus, already inclined to be racist against Duscur, “punished” it by massacring its people and taking it over.

Duscur

Church vs Agartha:

  • According to members of the Church of Seiros…
  • Children of the Goddess vs Humans With Technology (please read these two)
  • The Goddess, Sothis came to Fódlan 1000+ years ago. She brought prosperity and was the progenitor of a race called Nabateans, "the Children of the Goddess.”
  • The Agarthans, humans already existing in Fódlan, were gifted learnings about technology by the Goddess.
  • The Agarthans abused the technology and warred with each other (what a surprise). They had advanced to the point of nuclear warfare, eventually turning on the Goddess herself.
  • The Children of the Goddess “won” the battle, and the remaining Agarthans fled underground and continue to live on in the darkness, waiting to come into the light and attain their revenge.
  • The Children of the Goddess established the Church of Seiros to hide their true identities as Nabateans, and to use the awesome power of a religious following to rewrite the history of the world, and to keep in check evolution of technology to prevent humans from rising up again.

The Premise of My Story

They say history is written by the victors. It's about to be rewritten.

Enter Dimitri, the Prince of Faerghus. They say the people of Duscur assassinated his parents, but he knows this not to be true. When he discovers a professor from Duscur, he insists she help him discover the truth to clear her country’s name.

Enter Parvati, the world’s leading Technologist. Her parents made excavating ancient ruins their work; Parvati made Agarthan Technology her world. Little does she know, her post as Professor at the Officer’s Academy is a trap.

How does a Duscuri professor come to terms with the students of Faerghus? What will she do when she finds out the Assassination has an Agarthan link? And what happens when the Lion and the Lotus discover Truth has multiple enemies? For the powers that be have been circling around her for longer than she knows…

Murder mysteries. Mythic prophecies. Courtroom trials. Justice.

~*~*~

Parvati is the intersection of both struggles.

Secretly Khalid, the Crown Prince of Almyra, the country east of the Alliance, which the Alliance is often at war with.

  2. Hilda: extremely strong, extremely smart, she pretends to be incompetent to get out of doing work.

Daughter of House Goneril, which defends the Leceister Alliance’s eastern border against Almyra. She doesn't know Claude is the enemy prince.

Chapter 8: Fear the Deer

None

Chapter 9: The Black Eagle

  1. Hubert: this is the most vampire-like Fire Emblem character in existence. He is the shadowy, clever second-in-command of the Black Eagles, the last of the Three Houses. His family does intel operations.

Chapter Text

Character Reference: Chapters 13 to 18

Chapter 13: Intermission: Eight Hundred Years

No New Characters

Reminders:

  1. Archbishop Rhea: head of the Church of Seiros. Catherine worships her.

  2. Viceroy Seteth: second-in-command of the Church of Seiros and the strict Principal of the Officer’s Academy. Flayn's "Big Brother".

From Chapter 1: set Catherine and Shamir to spy on Professor Parvati. Has lured Professor Parvati to the Officer's Academy so that the Church could use her to gather Agarthan Technology so they could "make it disappear."

Chapter 14: The Second Test

New Characters:

  1. Lady Edelgard von Hresvelg: the driven and ambitious heir to the Adrestian Empire, House Leader of the Black Eagles, one of the Three Houses. Monarch of Parvati, Hanneman and Manuela (Adrestians) and top-of-command for Commander Randolph von Bergliez.

  2. High Commander Ladislava: an Adrestian soldier. In my story, currently the superior of Commander Randolph von Bergliez.

Reminders:

  1. Hubert: Lady Edelgard's retainer and the shadowy second-in-command of the Black Eagles. His family does intel operations.

An already advanced mage who, in Chapter 9, challenged Claude and Dimitri, then turned into an actual black eagle (a non-canon use of magic) as he left them in the dust.

  2. Catherine: the Prime Knight of the Knights of Seiros (the Church knights).Set by Seteth to spy on Parvati in Chapter 1.

As a woman from Faerghus, she has discriminatory tendencies against those of Duscur and almost attacked Dedue in Chapter 6, then escorted him and the Prince to the student dorms, and Parvati back to her quarters.

  3. Shamir: the cool archer-assassin-type Knight of Seiros who put Professor Parvati in a Dagdan hold in Chapter 1. Parvati and Randolph don't like her much.

Chapter 15: The Pact of Pan

Aside from Dorothea, most new characters are just getting cameos right now.

New Characters:

  1. Dorothea Arnault: a diva from the MittelFrank Opera Company in Adrestia. Manuela discovered her as an orphan with a singing talent on the streets of Enbarr.

“Oh my, you look like a wonderful person. Is this your first time at the monastery? Shall I show you around? Ah, my name is Dorothea. Before enrolling in school, I was in an opera company at the capital.” —Dorothea introducing herself

  2. Ferdinand von Aegir: is quite a character. Son of Duke Aegir, the Prime Minister of Adrestia and the primary sponsor of Parvati's Agarthan Tech businesses. Hence, he has Parvati's attention.

“I am more talented than anyone in my class—even Edelgard. I will lead the Adrestian Empire to a bright, enlightened future.” —Ferdinand

  3. Petra Macneary: with the personality of Starfire from Teen Titans, this is the princess of the country of Brigid, which Adrestia recently warred against and won. She is now being held essentially hostage so that Brigid doesn't turn against them again. She puts her all into everything.

“I can read and understand the language of Fódlan, but speak it... gives me difficulty. I hope I will keep having your support. And I will give you my support too, with my whole heart. I have things that I cannot fail to accomplish.”

  4. Bernadetta von Varley: 17 year-old extremely anxious shut-in who is convinced everyone is out to get her. Likes to sew and sing (privately). Her personality is definitely induced by trauma from an abusive father.

“I do like my time alone. Actually, it's more of a need. But you're right. I also need to venture out every once in a while. Maybe if I work as hard as you do, I can try it a little more.”

  5. (mentioned) Caspar von Bergliez: a 16-year old gung-ho fourth son of Adrestia's Minister of War. He is the fourth son, though, so he inherits nothing and aims to make it as a knight to prove his worth. He is Randolph's step-nephew, and therefore of particular interest to Parvati.

“My instincts tell me that he's up to no good, and my instincts are never wrong.”

  6. (mentioned) Linhardt von Hevring: a smart 16-year old mage who likes to nap. Heir to Adrestia's Minister of Domestic Affairs. He hates having to be a noble and wants to escape having to be heir to Count Hevring.

“It's not that I want to miss lectures...exactly. Drowsiness is my archnemesis. For some reason I just can't seem to win against it. Just talking about it makes me sleepy...”

  7. Blue Lions Parents: parents of Blue Lions students (of which Dimitri is leader, Dedue is a part). Faerghus is generally anti-Duscur. The same is implied about the parents, of which we have already seen from Parvati's encounter with Ashe and Lord Lonato.

Reminders:

  1. Claude: the smart-ass Duke-to-be of the Leceister Alliance, a sneaky tactician. Leader of Golden Deer, one of the Three Houses.

Secretly Khalid, the Crown Prince of Almyra, the country east of the Alliance, which the Alliance is often at war with.

Chapter 16: Q.E.D.

The Blue Lions:

  1. Ashe Ubert Gaspard: not born noble, but by a fantastic twist of fate, adopted by Lord Lonato of Gaspard. Lonato had warned Parvati to stay away from Ashe in Chapter 3, in the Cathedral.
  2. Felix Fraldarius: childhood friend of Dimitri, hates his guts. The surly one firing harsh truths.
  3. Ingrid Galatea: childhood friend of Dimitri. Reigns in Sylvain’s womanizing and harbors indiscreet anti-Duscur sentiment.
  4. Sylvain Gautier: childhood friend of Dimitri. The skirt-chaser who protests Ingrid’s racist viewpoints.
  5. Annette Dominic: the kind mage whose father, Sir Gustave, trained Dimitri, Felix, Ingrid and Sylvain as children.
  6. Mercedes von Bartel: mage friend of Annette, a wonderful baker. Can say the scariest things with a smile.

Chapter 17: Working Relationships

Scroll up to Chapter 15 for Black Eagles Characters.

Chapter 18: Elementary

  1. Lysithea von Ordelia: known as the magical atomic bomb, Lysithea is a plucky and fearless prodigy, the youngest student at the Academy. She bears 2 Crests (blood-based magical powers), one of which had been inserted into her through unethical experimentation.

Notes:

This is long overdue for my fandom-blind readers. Sorry! Didn't realize how many characters were mentioned in these three chapters!

Note: To help ongoing readers / fandom-blind readers, I will now be putting little reminders for all secondary characters who show up, since it is easy to forget secondary / minor characters who appeared months ago. :)

Thank you to Chloe_roo for such a sassy rendition of Parvati!!! 😍 🥰 💖 You can follow her on Twitter and Reddit!

Dimitri looked surprised, then laughed. “Is that a backup plan for a backup plan?”

“You always backup your backup plan," said Parvati.

Dimitri smiled. “Good to know.”

“But you don’t tell people about your final backup plan.”

“So there’s a backup plan you haven’t told us,” Dedue inserted.

Parvati started, then laughed, turning to Dimitri. “I don’t like how smart this one is.”

Chapter 14: Meme for Chapter 22: Lorenz Got Beaned

Chapter Text

Another meme created by Drebby on Discord, inspired by Chapter 22! 😆

Lorenz got beaned.

This moment was going to go down as one of Khalid’s favorite moments in life.

This was the moment the Golden Deer head watched Lorenz get beaned by the professor.

And by beaned by the professor, it wasn’t a case of Professor Parvati threw an object at Lorenz’s head. This was a case of Professor Parvati was the object thrown at Lorenz’s head.

Khalid and Lorenz were standing just outside the horse stables, arguing about something. Khalid would never remember what they were arguing about, just that they had seen Marianne talking to her horse “Dorte”, and she — mortified — was trying to make an escape. So she was just out of the stables herself.

Khalid would remember that glorious moment in three instants.

Instant One: Lorenz’s arguing face of frustration just as he was turning away from Claude.

Instant Two: Lorenz suddenly looking over his shoulder, because he heard the screaming, and in a split second identified an impending doom coming in from behind him.

Instant Three: the look on his face as Professor Parvati — hanging upside down from a pegasus by just one boot stuck in the saddle — smacked right into his back with so much force, Lorenz toppled face-first into Marianne, who had been standing just beside him. Collateral damage.

Khalid would replay it in his mind, again and again, for the rest of his life — Lorenz’s expressions: Frustration. — Danger? — AAAH!!! He’d remember this story to Lysithea over so years she would tell him to stop retelling it.

Chapter 15: Meme of Honor: "The Blaiddyd Battalion go DOOT.”

Chapter Text

The Forgotten Meme -- a.k.a. the first meme ever created for The Lion and the Lotus, by DragonCat for Chapter 6! 😆

DragonCat, I can’t believe it — I have no clue how this wasn’t in the Companion Doc for over the last year! But here it is now, in the place it rightfully deserves:

MEME OF HONOR.

-

Blaiddyd Battalion Be Like

Faerghus Soldiers go dOOt!

-

On the day Prince Dimitri and the Blaiddyd retinue were supposed to be entering the Garreg Mach Monastery, another retinue was traveling down the mountain. Because of the narrow nature of this road, traveling caravans and armies were required to reserve a time for one-way access to this road. But someone somewhere did not get the memo, because an Imperial foot-soldier army met ninety-eight horseback Faerghusi on a two-lane slope of the mountain.

Cue awkward stand-off.

Said stand-off went from awkward to bizarre in ten seconds.

The Faerghusi response — with no room for input from Dimitri — was to play the Faerghusi national anthem, loudly. And without pause.

It was unexplainably coordinated. No one knew who had the idea first, and no one knew why, but somehow, within ten seconds, every soldier of the Blaiddyd battalion had their horns out.

The Imperial soldiers were polite. Under orders of their second-in-command, they chose to oblige the Blaiddyd battalion. The foot-soldiers started moving single-file down the mountain, making space for the Faerghusi to proceed up the switchbacks.

The soldiers from Faerghus, on the other hand… Skilled in the art of sword and lance, they wielded their brass instruments right into the faces of the Imperial soldiers. Whether or not these Faerghusi soldiers had ever wanted to learn how to play this horn, they blew their hearts into these notes. They played with the bombastic audacity of knowing that their audience would have no idea if they were playing it wrong.

Decades later, this moment would be voted as the one, most annoying, most passive aggressive martial maneuver ever recorded in Fódlan military history.

Needless to say, the Prince was humiliated.

Chapter 19: Parvati with Guns - XCOM

Chapter Text

Hi All! Today's edition of fan content: Parvati with Guns. 🤣

My boyfriend has been playing XCOM, a sci-fi post alien-invasion game with game mechanics similar to Fire Emblem where you play as rebels trying to take Earth back from the aliens. He added Fire Emblem characters to his play -- including Parvati!!!

Here are the characters with spectacularly on-point backstories!

And best of all...

Here are Parvati and Dimitri being deployed alongside Hubert, Ferdinand, Shamir and Felix.

I can't stop grinning at the absurdity. 😆 She looks SO COOL!!! 😍

Chapter 21: Meme Ch. 38: We Can Replace Anything

Chapter Text

Drebby on Discord is back with a meme for Chapter 38: Attack on Spoons! 😆

It's an old Vine and I just cannot stop laughing at the size of this GIANT SPOON.

Anything, you say?

"Do not worry," the dining staff woman said to Lady Edelgard, offering a honey jar separate from the one Parvati was already holding out to her. "We’ll replace anything that has been soiled right away.”

Lady Edelgard blinked, perplexed, as Parvati’s eyes widened. Soiled. As the woman reached for the honey jar Parvati had used, Parvati slid it back out of her reach.

“Everything?” challenged Parvati, looking into the woman’s green eyes. “You’ll replace — everything?” She could hear the blood rush in like fire roaring in her hears.

Before the woman can say more, Parvati _attacked_ the coffee table. She ran both hands down the sides of the column of ceramic cups. She grabbed all of the stirring spoons into her left hand and flexed them into one bunch — had to get her palms into contact. They clinked against the ceramic cylindrical container when she dropped them in favor of the milk jug, the sugar pot, the orange juice, and she almost got her hands on the apple juice, but the woman shrieked and seized it away, out of Parvati’s reach.

“Oh no! You’ll have to replace the tablecloths!” Parvati said, running her hands on it back and forth. “In fact! You’ll have to replace the table!”

And then, behind Hubert, she saw the table with the lunch utensils. She declared to Hubert, “This Monastery will have no spoons.” His brows rose. She walked around him, making a beeline for the table, saying, “This Monastery will have no spoons!”

Chapter 23: Meme Ch. 38: We Can Replace Anything version 2!!!

Summary:

The Lion and the Lotus is back!

Long time no see! A much belated update for a second meme for Chapter 38: Attack on Spoons!

Here's Drebby of Discord's original meme, and Svarasvalkir's follow-up take!
